Kannada summary of the lesson JUSTICE ABOVE SELF:
ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ಶೇಖ್ ಮತ್ತು ಅಲ್ಗು ಚೌಧರಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಮತ್ತು ಆತ್ಮೀಯ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರ ಸ್ನೇಹ ಸಂಬಂಧ ತುಂಬಾ ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬರು ಊರು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋದಾಗ ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರು ತಮ್ಮ ಕುಟುಂಬವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಇಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪಾರ ಗೌರವವಿತ್ತು.
ಜುಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ವಯಸ್ಸಾದ ಚಿಕ್ಕಮ್ಮ ಇದ್ದಳು. ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಆಸ್ತಿ ಇತ್ತು. ಆಕೆ ಈ ಆಸ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಕೆಲವು ಷರತ್ತುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಅವನಿಗೆ ವರ್ಗಾಯಿಸಿದಳು. ಷರತ್ತುಗಳೆಂದರೆ:
1. ಅವಳು ಅವನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸಬೇಕು.
2. ಅವನು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಿತ್ತು.
ಈ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯು ಒಂದೆರಡು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿ ಕಾರ್ಯನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಿತು. ಆದರೆ ನಂತರ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಬದಲಾಯಿತು. ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಕುಟುಂಬವು ಹಳೆಯ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಯಿಂದ ಬೇಸತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಮುದುಕಿಯ ಬದುಕಿಗೆ ಬೇಕಾಗುವ ಅಲ್ಪಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಊಟಕ್ಕೂ ಮುಗಿಬೀಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ತನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯಂತೆ ಅವಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಸಡ್ಡೆ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ. ಅವಳು ಕೆಲವು ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಈ ಅವಮಾನಗಳನ್ನು ನುಂಗಿದಳು. ಆದರೆ ತಾಳ್ಮೆಗೆ ಮಿತಿಯಿದೆ.
ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಅವಳು ಜುಮ್ಮನ ಬಳಿ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ, ತನಗೆ ಅವನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸಲು ಇಷ್ಟವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತ್ಯೇಕ ಅಡುಗೆ ಮನೆ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲು ಮಾಸಿಕ ಭತ್ಯೆ ನೀಡಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸಿದಳು. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಜುಮ್ಮನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಗೆ ಮನೆ ನಡೆಸೋದು ಗೊತ್ತು ಎಂದ. ತಾಳ್ಮೆಯಿಂದ ಇರುವಂತೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕಮ್ಮನನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದರು. ಅವನ ಮಾತಿನಿಂದ ಚಿಕ್ಕಮ್ಮ ಕೋಪಗೊಂಡಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅವಳು ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಕರಣವನ್ನು ಗ್ರಾಮ ಪಂಚಾಯಿತಿಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದಳು.
ವಯಸ್ಸಾದ ಮಹಿಳೆ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಕರಣವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಲು ಜನರನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾಗಲು ಹೋದಳು. ಕೆಲವರು ಅವಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಹಾನುಭೂತಿ ತೋರಿಸಿದರು, ಇತರರು ಅವಳನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ನಕ್ಕರು. ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರು ಹೊಂದಾಣಿಕೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವಂತೆ ಸಲಹೆ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಅವಳು ಅಲ್ಗು ಚೌಧರಿಯನ್ನು ಭೇಟಿಯಾದಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಮಾತಾಡಿದಳು.
ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ನನ್ನ ಆತ್ಮೀಯ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಎಂದು ಅಲ್ಗು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ನಾನು ಅವನ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಹೇಗೆ ಹೋಗಬಹುದು? ಅತ್ತ ಮೌನ ವಹಿಸುವುದು ಸರಿಯಲ್ಲ ಎಂದರು. ಪಂಚಾಯತಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ಸತ್ಯ ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ ವಿನಂತಿಸಿದಳು. ಮರುದಿನ ಹಳೆಯ ಆಲದ ಮರದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಪಂಚಾಯತಿ ನಡೆಯಿತು.
ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ಹೇಳಿದನು, ಪಂಚದ ಧ್ವನಿ ದೇವರ ಧ್ವನಿ. ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ಚಿಕ್ಕಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಂಚನನ್ನು ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಲು ಅವಕಾಶ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಟ್ಟ. ಚಿಕ್ಕಮ್ಮ ಅಲ್ಗುವನ್ನು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಂಚ ಎಂದು ನಾಮಕರಣ ಮಾಡಿದಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪಂಚಗೆ ಶತ್ರು ಅಥವಾ ಮಿತ್ರನೂ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ದೇವರು ಪಂಚರ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಧ್ವನಿಯು ದೇವರ ಧ್ವನಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಮತ್ತು ವಯಸ್ಸಾದ ಮಹಿಳೆ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಕರಣವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದಳು.
ಚಿಕ್ಕಮ್ಮ ಯಾವ ಷರತ್ತಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಆಸ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ವರ್ಗಾಯಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ನಿರೂಪಿಸಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ಪತ್ನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಚಿಕ್ಕಮ್ಮನ ನಡುವೆ ಜಗಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈಗ ಅತ್ತ ಮಾಸಿಕ ಭತ್ಯೆ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಪಾವತಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.
ಇತರರನ್ನು ಸಂಪರ್ಕಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ, ಅಲ್ಗು ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ತನ್ನ ಚಿಕ್ಕಮ್ಮನಿಗೆ ಮಾಸಿಕ ಭತ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಬೇಕು ಅಥವಾ ಅವಳ ಆಸ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಘೋಷಿಸಿದನು. ಪಂಚಾಯತ್ ನಂತರ ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ಅಲ್ಗುವನ್ನು ದ್ವೇಷಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಅವರು ಅಲ್ಗು ಜೊತೆಗಿನ ಸ್ನೇಹವನ್ನು ಮುರಿದನು. ಗೆಳೆತನದ ಬಂಧ ಮುರಿಯಿತು. ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ಅಲ್ಗುವನ್ನು ಶತ್ರುವಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಯಸಿದನು.
ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳ ನಂತರ ಅಲ್ಗು ದುರಾದೃಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾದ. ಅವನು ಕಷ್ಟದ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲಿಇದ್ದನು. ಅಲ್ಗು ತನ್ನ ಎತ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಬಂಡಿ ಚಾಲಕ ಸಂಜು ಸಾಹು ಎಂಬುವವರಿಗೆ ಮಾರಿದನು. ಸಂಜು ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳೊಳಗೆ ಬೆಲೆಯನ್ನು ಪಾವತಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಷರತ್ತಿನ ಮೇಲೆ. ಸಂಜು ತನ್ನ ಎತ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಕೊಂಡೊಯ್ದ. ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳ ನಂತರ ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳೊಳಗೆ ಎತ್ತು ಸತ್ತಿತು.
ಎತ್ತು ಸತ್ತ ಹಲವಾರು ತಿಂಗಳ ನಂತರ, ಅಲ್ಗು ಇನ್ನೂ ಪಾವತಿಸದ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಸಾಹುಗೆ ಕೇಳಿದನು. ಆದರೆ ಸಂಜು ಹಣ ಕೊಡಲು ತಯಾರಿಲ್ಲ. ಎತ್ತು ನನಗೆ ಬಹಳ ದೊಡ್ಡ ನಷ್ಟ ಮಾಡಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಒಂದು ತಿಂಗಳೊಳಗೆ ಅದು ಸತ್ತುಹೋಯಿತು. ಪ್ರಕರಣವನ್ನು ಪಂಚಾಯತಿಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅಲ್ಗು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದನು. ಮರುದಿನ ಹಳೆಯ ಆಲದ ಮರದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಪಂಚಾಯತಿ ನಡೆಯಿತು.
ಅಲ್ಗು ಎದ್ದುನಿಂತು, “ಪಂಚದ ಧ್ವನಿ ದೇವರ ಧ್ವನಿ. ಸಾಹು ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಂಚ್ ನ ನಾಮನಿರ್ದೇಶನ ಮಾಡಲಿ. ಅವರ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಕ್ಕೆ ನಾನು ಬದ್ಧನಾಗಿರುತ್ತೇನೆ.” ಸಾಹು ಈ ಅವಕಾಶವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ನ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾಪಿಸಿದನು. ಅಲ್ಗು ಹೃದಯ ಒಡೆದುಹೋಯಿತು.
ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಪಂಚನಾದನು, ಅವನು ನ್ಯಾಯಾಧೀಶರಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತು ತಮ್ಮ ಕಚೇರಿಯ ಘನತೆಯನ್ನು ಅರಿತುಕೊಂಡನು. ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮಾತನಾಡಲು ಮತ್ತು ನ್ಯಾಯವನ್ನು ನೀಡಲು ತನ್ನ ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕ ಭಾವನೆಗಳು ಅಡ್ಡಿಯಾಗಲು ಅವನು ಬಿಡಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಲ್ಗು ಮತ್ತು ಸಾಹು ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರಕರಣಗಳನ್ನು ಮಂಡಿಸಿದರು.
ಅಲ್ಗು ಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಸಂತೋಷವಾಯಿತು. ಅವನು ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಹೇಳಿದನು, “ಪಂಚಾಯ್ತಿಗೆ ಜಯವಾಗಲಿ. ಇದು ನ್ಯಾಯ. ದೇವರು ಪಂಚರ ಧ್ವನಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.”
ಸಾಹು ಎತ್ತಿನ ಬೆಲೆ ಕೊಡಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ಘೋಷಿಸಿದನು. ಸಾಹು ಎತ್ತನ್ನು ಖರೀದಿಸಿದಾಗ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಅಂಗವೈಕಲ್ಯ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ದನದ ಸಾವು ದುರದೃಷ್ಟಕರವಾದರೂ ಅಲ್ಗುವನ್ನು ದೂಷಿಸುವಂತಿಲ್ಲ.
ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಜುಮ್ಮನ್ ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನ ಜೊತೆ ವೈರತ್ವ ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೆ. ಪಂಚ ಎಂದರೆ ಏನೆಂದು ಇಂದು ಅರಿವಾಯಿತು. ಪಂಚರಿಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಅಥವಾ ಶತ್ರು ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ ಆದರೆ ನ್ಯಾಯ ಮಾತ್ರ. ಇದನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿ ಅಲ್ಗು ಕೂಡ ಕಣ್ಣೀರಿಟ್ಟನು. ಅವರ ಕಣ್ಣೀರು ಅವರ ನಡುವಿನ ತಪ್ಪು ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆಯ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕೊಳೆಯನ್ನು ತೊಳೆಯಿತು.
ENGLISH SUMMARY OF THE LESSON JUSTICE ABOVE SELF:
Jumman Shaikh and Algu Chowdhary were good and close friends. Their friendship bond was very strong. When either of them went away from the village, the other looked after his family. Both were greatly respected in the village.
Jumman had an old aunt. She had some property. She transferred this property to him on some conditions. The conditions are:
- She would stay with him.
- He would look after her.
This arrangement worked well for a couple of years. But thereafter the situation changed. Jumman and his family were tired of the old relative. Jumman became as indifferent to her as his wife, who grudged even the little food that the old lady needed for survival. She swallowed these insults for a few months. But patience has its limits.
One day she spoke to Jumman that she is not wanted to live in his house. So she demanded monthly allowance to set up a separate kitchen. For that Jumman said that his wife knows how to run the house. He asked aunt to be patient. By his words aunt became angry and she decided to take her case to the village panchayat.
The old lady went about meeting people explaining her case. Some sympathized with her, others laughed at her. A few others advised her to make adjustment. she met Algu Chowdhary and spoke to him.
Algu said that Jumman is my best friend. How can I go against him? Aunt told it is not right to keep silence. She requested to come to the panchayat and spoke the truth. Next day panchayat was held under the old banyan tree.
Jumman said, “The voice of the Panch is the voice of God. I allowed my aunt to nominate the head pancha. Aunt nominated Algu as the head pancha and told that pancha knows neither enemy nor friend. God lives in the heart of the Panch, and his voice is the voice of God.” And the old lady explained her case.
Jumman narrated on what condition had the aunt transferred the property. But there is a quarrels between his wife and aunt. Now aunt is claiming a monthly allowance. He is unable to pay.
After consulting others, Algu announced that Jumman must pay his aunt a monthly allowance, or give back her property. After the panchayat Jumman started to hate Algu. He broke down friendship with Algu. The bond of friendship was broken. Jumman saw Algu as an enemy and wanted to take revenge.
Few days later Algu was in bad luck. He was in tight position. Algu sold his bullocks to Sanju Sahu, a cart driver of the village. On the condition that Sanju must pay the price within a month. Sanju took his bullocks to his house. Few days later bullock died within a month.
Several months after the death of the bullock, Algu asked Sahu of the money he had not yet paid. But Sanju is not ready to pay the money. He told that the bullock made very big loss for me. It died within a month. Algu decided to take the case to the Panchayat. Next day Panchayat was held under the old banyan tree.
Algu stood up and said, “The voice of the Panch is the voice of God. Let Sahu nominate the head Panch. I will abide by his decision.” Sahu saw his chance and proposed the name of Jumman. Algu’s heart sank and he turned pale.
Jumman became the head Panch, he realized his responsibility as a judge and the dignity of his office. He did not to allow his personal feelings to come in the way of speaking the truth and doing justice. Both Algu and Sahu presented their cases.
Algu became very happy. He said loudly, “Victory to the Panchayat. This is justice. God lives in the voice of the Panch.”
Jumman announced that Sahu should pay the price of the bullock. When Sahu bought the bullock it didn’t have any disabilities. The death of the bullock was unfortunate but Algu cannot blamed for it At the end Jumman told that he had become Algu’s enemy. Today he realized what it meant to be a Panch. A Panch knows no friend or enemy but only justice. By hearing this Algu was also in tears. His tears washed away all the dirt of misunderstanding between them.
