‘Do not Ask of Me, My Love’ ಎಂಬುದು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಒಬ್ಬರ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನವನ್ನು ಜಾಗೃತಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಕವಿತೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಸ್ವಯಂನಿಂದ ಸಾರ್ವತ್ರಿಕವಾಗಿ ಪರಿವರ್ತನೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಕವಿತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯತಮೆಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಮೇಲಿನ ನಿರಾಶೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮನವಿ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಕಾಲವೂ ಇತ್ತು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಅವರು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅವರ ಜೀವನವು ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮಾನವಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರವರ್ಧಮಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿತು. ಅವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯವೇ ಸರ್ವಸ್ವವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಈಗ ಅದು ವ್ಯರ್ಥವೋ, ಭ್ರಮೆಯೋ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಿತು.
ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯತಮೆಯೇ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಪಂಚ ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಭಾವಿಸಿದ. ಆದರೆ ಅದು ಭ್ರಮೆ ಎಂದು ಈಗ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗಿದೆ. ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಸಂತೋಷಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ದುಃಖಗಳಿವೆ ಎಂದು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಈಗ ತಿಳಿದಿದೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿಯು ಯುದ್ಧ, ಗುಲಾಮಗಿರಿ ಮತ್ತು ರೋಗಗಳ ಗಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಶತಮಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಈಗ ರೇಷ್ಮೆ, ಸ್ಯಾಟಿನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಬ್ರೊಕೇಡ್ ಹೊದಿಕೆಗಳಿಂದ ಮುಚ್ಚಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿ ಬಡತನ, ಅಸಹಾಯಕ ಬಡವರ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರ ದುಃಖಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಕವಿಯು ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ತಾನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಅದೇ ಅಳತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯತಮೆಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗಿಂತ ಇತರ ದುಃಖಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಇತರ ಸಂತೋಷಗಳಿವೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕವಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತಮ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನವನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರಪಂಚದ ದುಃಖಗಳನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು.
ಈ ಕವಿತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿ ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯತಮೆಯ ಯೌವನದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದ ಅದೇ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಂದಿರುಗಿಸಲು ತನ್ನ ಅಸಮರ್ಥತೆಯನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನು ಈಗ ಜಗತ್ತನ್ನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಅರ್ಥಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಕವಿಗೆ ತಾನು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಸ್ಪಂದಿಸಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
Summary in English:
‘Do not Ask of Me, My Love’ is a poem of awakening of one’s perspective towards love. It is a transformation from the self to the universal. In this poem poet appeals to his beloved about her disappointment over his love. He also admits that there was a time of love. His life was bright and booming. His beloved beauty was everything. Now he came to know that it is vain or illusion.
The poet thought that his beloved was his world. But now he understands that it was an illusion. He now knows that there are other sorrows in the world more than their love and other pleasures too. In this the poet refers to the past centuries that bear in them wounds of war, slavery and diseases. But now lie covered in silk, satin and brocade shrouds. Here poet also telling about poverty, helpless poor’s condition and their sorrows.
The poet confesses to his beloved that he cannot express his love in the same measure that he used to do once. Because there are other sorrows in the world than love and other pleasures too. Thus the poet gives love a better interpretation and understand sorrows of the world must better.
In this poem the poet tries to convey to his beloved his inability to return the same love he had in their youthful days. He now understands the world better. The poet feels that he has to respond to much bigger issues.
