ಮಹಾಭಾರತದಲ್ಲಿ, ಪಾಂಡವರು ದಾಳಗಳ ಆಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೌರವರಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡರು ಮತ್ತು ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಈ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಸುರಕ್ಷತೆಗಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತು ತಮ್ಮ ದೈನಂದಿನ ಅಗತ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪೂರೈಸಲು ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಸ್ಥಳದಿಂದ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ತೆರಳಬೇಕಾಯಿತು. ಹನ್ನೆರಡನೇ ವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದಿನ, ಪಾಂಡವ ಸಹೋದರರು ಜಿಂಕೆಯ ಅನ್ವೇಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅರಣ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಅಲೆದಾಡಿದರು.

ಸೂರ್ಯನು ತಲೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿಸಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದನು ಮತ್ತು ಐದು ಸಹೋದರರು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ದಣಿದ ಮತ್ತು ಬಾಯಾರಿದರು. ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನು ವಿಶ್ರಾಂತಿ ಪಡೆಯಲು ಮರದ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಮುಲಗಿ ನಕುಲನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದನು: “ಸಹೋದರ, ಆ ಮರವನ್ನು ಹತ್ತಿ ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ಕೊಳ ಅಥವಾ ನದಿ ಇದೆಯೇ ಎಂದು ನೋಡು.” ಆಗ ನಕುಲ ಹೇಳಿದನು “ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ನೀರಿನ ಸಸ್ಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕ್ರೇನ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿಯೂ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ನೀರು ಇರಬೇಕು. “

ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನು ನಕುಲನನ್ನು ಕುಡಿಯಲು ನೀರು ತರಲು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದನು. ನಕುಲನಿಗೆ ನೀರಿನ ಕೊಳವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ಸಂತೋಷವಾಯಿತು. ಅವನಿಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆಯಾಗಿತ್ತು ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವನು ಮೊದಲು ನೀರು ಕುಡಿಯಲು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದನು; ಆದರೆ ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಕೈಯನ್ನು ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅದ್ದಿದಾಗ, ಒಂದು ಧ್ವನಿಯು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಕೇಳಿಸಿತು: “ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸು! ನಕುಲ! ಕುಡಿಯಬೇಡ. ಈ ಕೊಳ ನನಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು. ಓ ಮಾದ್ರಿಯ ಮಗನೇ, ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿ ನಂತರ ನೀರು ಕುಡಿ.” ಆದರೆ ನಕುಲನು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸಿ ನೀರು ಕುಡಿದನು. ಇದ್ದಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಅವನು ಭಯಾನಕ ನಿದ್ರಾಹೀನತೆ ಇಂದ ಸತ್ತವರ ಹಾಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದನು.

ನಕುಲ ಬಹಳ ಸಮಯ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗದಿದ್ದಾಗ, ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನು ಸಹದೇವನನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿ ವಿಷಯ ಏನೆಂದು ನೋಡಲು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದನು. ಸಹದೇವನು ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸಿದನು. ಅವನು ನೀರನ್ನು ಕುಡಿದು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದನು. ಸಹದೇವನು ಕೂಡ ಹಿಂತಿರುಗಲು ವಿಫಲನಾದಾಗ, ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನು ಅರ್ಜುನನನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದನು. ಅರ್ಜುನನು ಹೋಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರರು ಕೊಳದ ಬಳಿ ಸತ್ತು ಬಿದ್ದಿರುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದನು. ದುಃಖದಿಂದ ಹೃದಯವು ಮುರಿದುಹೋಯಿತು, ಅವನು ಅವರ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಬಯಸಿದನು. ಅವನಿಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆಯೂ ಇತ್ತು. ನೀರು ಕುಡಿಯಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸಿದೆ.

ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯ ಧ್ವನಿ ಕೇಳಿಸಿತು: “ನೀವು ನೀರು ಕುಡಿಯುವ ಮೊದಲು ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿ. ಈ ಕೊಳ ನನ್ನದು. ನೀವು ನನಗೆ ಅವಿಧೇಯರಾದರೆ, ನೀವು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸಹೋದರರನ್ನು ಹಿಂಬಾಲಿಸುತ್ತೀರಿ. ಆಗ ಅರ್ಜುನ ಹೇಳಿದನು“ನೀನು ಯಾರು? ನನ್ನ ಬಂದು ಮುಂದೆ ಬಾ ನಾನು ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲುತ್ತೇನೆ. ” ಅವನ ಧ್ವನಿಯ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚೂಪಾದ ಬಾಣಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆದನು. ಅದೃಶ್ಯವು ತಿರಸ್ಕಾರದಿಂದ ನಗುತ್ತಾ ಹೇಳಿತು, “ನಿಮ್ಮ ಬಾಣಗಳು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.” ಅರ್ಜುನನು ಈ ಕಾಣದ ವೈರಿಯನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡಲು ಬಯಸಿದನು. ಆದರೆ ಮೊದಲು ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಭಯಾನಕ ಬಾಯಾರಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಗಿಸಬೇಕಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, ಅವನು ನೀರನ್ನು ಕುಡಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಳಗೆ ಸತ್ತಹಾಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದನು.

ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆ ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ನೀರನ್ನು ಸೇವಿಸಿದರು. ಮತ್ತು ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರರ ನಡುವೆ ಸತ್ತಹಾಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದನು.

“ಭೂಮಿಗಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟವಾದದ್ದು ಯಾವುದು?” ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರ ಹೇಳಿದ, “ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುವ ತಾಯಿ.”

“ಗಾಳಿಗಿಂತ ವೇಗವಾದದ್ದು ಯಾವುದು?” “ಮನಸ್ಸು”, ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿದ.

“ಒಬ್ಬನನ್ನು ನಿಜವಾದ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಯಾವುದು? ಇದು ಜನ್ಮ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ನಡವಳಿಕೆ

“ವಿಶ್ವದ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಅದ್ಭುತ ಯಾವುದು?” “ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಪುರುಷರು ಸಾಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಯಮನ ವಾಸಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೂ ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಬದುಕಲು ಉಳಿದಿರುವವರು.”

ಹೀಗೆ, ಯಕ್ಷನು ಅನೇಕ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಯುಧಿಷ್ಟಿರನು ಎಲ್ಲದಕ್ಕೂ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿದನು. ಆಗ ಯಕ್ಷ ಕೇಳಿದನು “ಓ ರಾಜನೇ, ನಿನ್ನ ಸತ್ತ ಸಹೋದರರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬನು ಈಗ ಪುನರುಜ್ಜೀವನಗೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು. ನೀವು ಯಾರನ್ನು ಪುನರುಜ್ಜೀವನಗೊಳಿಸಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತೀರಿ? ಅವನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಜೀವಕ್ಕೆ ಬರಬೇಕು.”

ಆಗ ನಕುಲ ಯೆಂದು ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರ ಉತ್ತರಿಸಿದನು. ಆಗ ಯಕ್ಷ ಕೇಳಿದನು “ನೀನು ಭೀಮ ಅಥವಾ ಅರ್ಜುನನಿಗೆ ಆದ್ಯತೆ ನೀಡದೆ ನಕುಲನನ್ನು ಏಕೆ ಆರಿಸಿದ್ದೀರಿ? ಆಗ ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರ ಹೇಳಿದನು “ಕುಂತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾದ್ರಿ ನನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಪತ್ನಿಯರು. ನಾನು ಕುಂತಿಯ ಮಗ ಮತ್ತು ಬದುಕುಳಿದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಆದರೆ ನಕುಲ ಮಾದ್ರಿಯ ಒಬ್ಬನೇ ಮಗ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ನಾನು ನಕುಲನನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡೆ.”

ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನ ಈ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕತೆಗೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿ ಯಕ್ಷನು ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಹೋದರರನ್ನು ಜೀವಂತ ಮಾಡಿದನು.

ತನ್ನ ಮಗ ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ಮತ್ತು ಅವನನ್ನು ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಜಿಂಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಯಕ್ಷನ ರೂಪವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದಿದ್ದನು ಯಮ, ಸಾವಿನ ಅಧಿಪತಿ. ಅವನು ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನನ್ನು ಅಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು ಆಶೀರ್ವದಿಸಿದನು. ಯಮ ಹೇಳಿದನು : “ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ವನವಾಸದ ನಿಗದಿತ ಅವಧಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸಲು ಕೆಲವೇ ದಿನಗಳು ಉಳಿದಿವೆ. 13 ವರ್ಷಗಳು ಸಹ ಹಾದುಹೋಗುತ್ತವೆ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶತ್ರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರೂ ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕಾರ್ಯವನ್ನು ನೀವು ಯಶಸ್ವಿಯಾಗಿ ಪೂರೈಸುತ್ತೀರಿ, ”ಮತ್ತು ಇದನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ ಆತ ಕಣ್ಮರೆಯಾದ.

English Summary:

Introduction

In the Mahabharatha, the Pandavas lost everything in the game of dice to the Kauravas and had to live in the forest for twelve years. During this period they had to constantly move from place to place for safety and to meet their daily needs. One day in the twelfth year, the Pandava brothers wandered deep into the forest in pursuit of a deer……

The sun was hot overhead and the five brothers grew more and more weary and thirsty. Yudhistira sank down under a tree to rest and said to Nakula: “Brother, climb that tree and see whether there is any pool or river nearby.”Nakula replied “At a little distance I see water plants and cranes. There must certainly be water there.”

Yudhistira sent Nakula to bring water to drink. Nakula was happy by seeing water pool. He was very thirsty so he decided to drink water first ; but when he dip his hand in the water, heard a voice which said: “Stop! Nakula! Do not drink. This pool belongs to me. O son of Madri, answer my questions and then drink the water.” But Nakula ignored the warning and drank water. Suddenly he feel terribly drowsy and fell down; to all appearance dead.

When Nakula did not return for a long time, Yudhistira sent Sahadeva to see what the matter was. Sahadeva also ignored the warning. He drank the water and at once dropped down. When Sahadeva too failed to return, Yudhistira sent Arjuna. Arjuna went and saw his brothers lying dead near the pool. Heart-broken with grief, he wanted to avenge their deaths. He was also very thirst. Tried to drink water.

Again the warning voice was heard: “Answer my questions before you drink the water. This pool is mine. If you disobey me, you’ll follow your brothers.” Arjuna replied, “Who are you? Come and stand up to me and I will kill you.” He shot sharp arrows in the direction of the voice.

The invisible being laughed in scorn and said, “Your arrows can’t touch me.” Arjuna wanted to destroy this unseen foe, but first he had to quench his terrible thirst. So, he drank the water and also fell down dead.

After few minutes, Yudhistira called Bhima and said: “Dear brother, even Arjuna, the great hero hasn’t returned. Something terrible must have happened to our brothers. Please find them quickly.” Bhima went without any thinking. Like Arjuna, Bhima also did not heed the warning and drank the water. And instantly he also fell dead among his brothers.

Yudhistira worried because his brothers had not returned so he went to see what is the matter. When he came near a pool he saw his four brothers lying on the ground. He was shocked. He got into the pool to quench his thirst. At once a voice without form warned him: ” Your brothers died because they did not heed my words. Do not follow them. Answer my questions first and then quench your thirst. This pool is mine.”

Yudhistira knew that these words were of a Yaksha and guessed what had happened to his brothers. He saw a possible way of redeeming the situation. He said to the bodiless voice, “Please ask your questions”. The voice put questions rapidly one after another.

It asked: “What makes Sun shine every day?”
Yudhistira replied, “The power of God.”
“What rescues man in danger?”
Yudhistira quickly answered, “Courage.”
“What is more nobly sustaining than the earth?”
Yudhistira said, “The mother who brings up the children.”
“What is faster than wind?”
“Mind”, Yudhistira replied.
“What befriends a traveller?”
“Learning.”
“Who is the friend of one who stays at home?”
“The wife.”
“Who accompanies a man in death?”
“Dharma. That alone accompanies the soul in its solitary journey after death.”
“Which is the biggest vessel?”
“The earth, which contains all within itself, is the greatest vessel.”
“What is happiness?”
“Happiness is the result of good conduct.”
“What is that, abandoning which, man becomes loved by all?”
“Pride – for abandoning that man will be loved by all.”
“What is the loss which brings joy and not sorrow?”
“Anger – giving it up, we will no longer be subjected to sorrow.”
“What is that, by giving up which, man becomes wealthy?”
“Desire – getting rid of it, man becomes wealthy.”
“What makes one a real Brahman? Is it birth, good conduct or learning? Answer decisively.”
“Birth and learning do not make one a Brahman. Good conduct alone does. However learned a person may be, he will not be a Brahman, if he is a slave to bad habits.

“What is the greatest wonder in the world?”
“Every day men see creatures depart to Yama’s abode and yet, those who remain, seek to live forever. This verily is the greatest wonder.”

Thus, the Yaksha posed many questions and Yudhistira answered them all. In the end the Yaksha asked, “O king, one of your dead brothers can now be revived. Whom do you want revived? He shall come back to life.”

Yudhistira chose Nakelu. So Yaksha asked “Why did you choose Nakula in preference to Bhima or Arjuna ?” To this quesrion Yudhistira replied “Kunti and Madri were the two wives of my father. I am a son of Kunti and surviving. But Nakula is the only son of Madri. So I choose Nakula .”

By this Yaksha became vaer happy and he revived his all brothers. It was Yama, the lord of Death, who had taken the form of the deer and the Yaksha, so that he might see his son Yudhistira and test him. He embraced Yudhistira and blessed him. Yama said: “Only a few days remain to complete the stipulated period of your exile in the forest. 13 years will also pass by. None of your enemies will be able to discover you. You will successfully fulfil your undertaking,” and saying this, he disappeared.
