I. Answer the following questions in about two or three sentences each.

1. “The king was foolish.” Do you agree with this statement? Justify your answer quoting one incident from the text.

Ans: Yes, I agree with this statement. The king was suffering from having nothing to do. But he said that he was that death’s door.

2. ‘Physicians and surgeons are dolts’. Why did the king call them dolts?

Ans: Physicians and surgeons examine the king. But they could find nothing wrong. So the king called them dolts.

3. What did the simple woman say to the king after she peered into his face?

Ans: The simple woman said to the king that he was suffering from a strange and rare disease. So rare and strange that no name was there for it.

4. ‘You will be cured instantly,’ said the simple old woman. What was the cure suggested?

Ans: The simple old woman suggested the king to sleep but one night in the shirt of a happy man and he will be cured instantly.

5. Why did the soldiers and courtiers, messengers and heralds have to travel far and wide?

Ans: The soldiers and courtiers, messengers and heralds had to travel far and wide to bring the king back the shirt of a happy man.

6. ‘I sing from joy,’ said the stranger. Why do you think the stranger sang from joy?

Ans: The stranger said that he loved his fellow-men, He owned little and wanted less. This made the stranger happy and sang from joy.

7. Why did the king hang his head in shame? What did he resolve afterwards?

Ans: The soldiers found a happy man in the little stable boy, but the boy was not wearing a shirt. So the king hung his head in shame. He resolved then to become a good king, to help people and to rule well.

8. Do you think the title of the story is appropriate? Give reasons.

Ans: Yes, the title of the story is appropriate. Because in the beginning the king was foolish, at the end he realized his folly. His disease was cured in a simple way by the example of a happy man.

9. “People who have nothing to do are bored to death.” Explain this statement.

Ans: People who have nothing to do are always doing some useless work. They act foolishly about various things. People get confused with them. They couldn’t solve their problems easily. So, people who have nothing to do are bored to death.

10. Suggest another title to the story.

Ans: I like the title of the story. We may also suggest titles as following:

1. The Happy Man’s shirt

2. Simple cure of Simple Woman

3. The Foolish King

4. Desire is the source of misery
