1. What kind of atmosphere existed in the country when Aruna entered politics?
Ans: Aruna entered into politics at the time when the freedom struggle was raging and youth were laying down for their country.
2. Why was she termed a non-conformist?
Ans: Aruna broke convention at the age of 19. She married Asaf Ali who was 20 years senior to her. So she termed a non-conformist.
3. What was the impact of Aruna’s public address during the Salt Satyagraha?
Ans: When Aruna addressed public she arrested for one year. When most of the prisoners were released, but she was not released.
4. Why had the committee planned to hoist the tricolour? What had led to Gandhi’s arrest before the hoisting of the flag?
Ans: Bombay congress session passed the Quit India movement in 1942. So the committee planned to hoist the tricolour. But the British got this news and arrested Gandhi and other top leaders.
5. “There’s no arrest warrant for you, Madam.” Whom else was the warrant given to? What did Aruna persuade the British sergeant to do?
Ans: The arrest warrant was given to Asaf Ali. Aruna persuaded the British sergeant to let her accompany them to the railway station to see off her husband.

II. Answer the following questions in four – five sentences each:
1. Describe the scene at Victoria Terminus in the early hours of August 9, 1942, as witnessed by Aruna Asaf Ali.
Ans: Dawn was about to break and there was a cordon around the Victoria terminus to keep the crowds at bay. As she walked along the platform, she saw Maulana Azad sitting in a window in a compartment of a special train and talking to him.
2. Narrate an instance from the biography to justify the fact that the British were extremely autocratic and ruthless?
Ans: During Salt Satyagraha, she was sentenced one year imprisonment. A few months later, when most political prisoners were released, she was not released until a public agitation was launched in support.
3. Why was Aruna Asaf Ali considered the Grand Old Lady of the freedom struggle?
Ans: Aruna entered into freedom struggle. In the absence of senior leaders like Gandhiji and Maulana Azad, she unfurled the tricolor at Gowalia Tank Maidan. After Independence, she made social service until her death. So Aruna Asaf Ali considered the Grand Old Lady of the freedom struggle.
4. What was Aruna’s advice to the freedom fighters?
Ans: Aruna advised freedom fighters not to allow any academic arguments like violence and non-violence. She further advised that every student and youth should think and feel like a soldiers of nation.
5. What was Gandhiji’s advice to Aruna? Why could she not abide by it?
Ans: Gandhiji advised Aruna to surrender and take the price 5000 for her arrest and reserve the prize money for the great Indian cause. But Aruna surrendered only when the warrants for her arrest were canceled on 26th January 1946.
6. What were the awards given to Aruna? Why were they given?
Ans: Aruna was awarded the Nehru Award in 1992 for International Understanding. The country honored her with the Bharata Ratna posthumously. These awards were given for her social service and for the freedom movement.
