Types of Sentences

There are four types of English sentence. These kinds are based on the purpose and function of the sentence. They are as following.

  1. Assertive sentence
  2. Interrogative sentence
  3. Imperative sentence and
  4. Exclamatory sentence

1.Assertive sentence: Types of Sentences

The sentence which makes statement is called as assertive sentence. This is also called as Declarative sentence.

These types of sentences tell us something. They give us information. And normally ends with full-stop.

Assertive sentence structure:  Subject + verb ……..

Example for assertive sentence:

1.She drinks coffee.

2.He is giving money.

3.They were riding a bike.

An assertive sentences can be positive or negative. Look at the examples:

Positive sentence:

1. We are working now.

2. She writes a poem.

3. John has left the bag.

4. He was eating a Pizza.

5. Shreya told the truth.

Negative sentence:

1. We are not working now.

2. She does not write a poem.

3. John has not left the bag.

4. He was not eating a Pizza.

5. Shreya did not tell the truth.


2. Interrogative sentence: Types of Sentences

A sentence that asks a question is called an interrogative sentence. These sentences usually end with a question mark.

Interrogative sentence structure:  (Wh word +) Auxiliary + subject + Verb….

Examples for interrogative sentence:

1. Who is looking at you?

2. Do you understand this?

3. He is reading. Isn’t he?

4. When do you come?

5. Is it your mobile?

Types of interrogative sentence:

There are three types in interrogative sentence. They are as following.

  1. Wh questions: E.g: Why are you sleeping?
  2. Yes/No type questions: E.g: Are you sleeping?
  3. Question tag: E.g: He is sleeping, isn’t he?

Interrogative sentences can be positive or negative. Look at the examples:

Positive sentence:

1. Why are you going to shop?

2. Do you come now?

3. Is it easy to study?

4. She is reading book, isn’t she?

5. Which is your bag?

Negative sentence:

1. Why are you not going to shop?

2. Don’t you come now

3. Is it not easy to study?

4. She is not reading book, is she?

5. Which is not your bag?


3. Imperative sentence:

A sentence that expresses an order, request, command or desire is called an imperative sentence. They tell us to do something.

# Note that there is usually no subject, because the subject is understood. It is YOU.

# Imperative sentence structure: Base verb….

Examples for imperative sentences:

1. Don’t study all the poems.

2. Please, give me a book.

3. Stop talk ! Shouted the boss.

4. Be there at 10 o’clock.

5. Open the door.

Imperative sentences can be positive or negative. Look at the examples:

Positive sentence:

1. Stop this !

2. Open your mouth.

3. Keep quiet.

4. Please, come tomorrow.

5. Move fast.

Negative sentence:

1. Don’t stop this?

2. Don’t open your mouth.

3. Don’t keep quit.

4. Please, don’t come tomorrow?

5. Don’t move fast.


4. Exclamatory sentence:

A sentence that expresses strong feelings of mind is called an exclamatory sentence.

# These can express joy, sorrow, surprise, wonder, pain or fear. etc

# These sentences always end with an exclamation mark. ( ! )

Examples for exclamatory sentence:

1. What a beautiful flower !

2. Alas ! She died by accident.

3. Hurrah ! RCB won the match.

4. Oh, it is Suman !

5. Ouch ! you are hurting me.
