ನೋಬಲ್ ಬಿಷಪ್ ಒಬ್ಬ ಕರುಣಾಳು ಹೃದಯದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ. ಅವನು ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಕುಳಿತಿದ್ದಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಸಹೋದರಿ ಬ್ಯಾಪ್ಟಿಸ್ಟೈನ್ ಬಡಿಸಲು ಸಿದ್ಧಳಾಗಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಆಗ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಪರಾಧಿ ಕೋಣೆಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿ ತನ್ನನ್ನು ಜೀನ್ ವಾಲ್ಜೀನ್ ಎಂದು ಪರಿಚಯಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವರು ಹತ್ತೊಂಬತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಜೈಲಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದನು. ಮೈಲುಗಟ್ಟಲೆ ನಡೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದನು. ಅವನು ಮೂರು ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ ಏನನ್ನೂ ತಿಂದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನೀಗೆ-ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ಯಾರು ನೀಡುತ್ತಲಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಬಿಷಪ್ ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರಿಗೆ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ತಟ್ಟೆಯನ್ನು ಹಾಕಲು ಮತ್ತು ಹಾಸಿಗೆಯ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಅವಳು ಭಯದಿಂದಲೇ ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡಳು.
ಬಿಷಪ್ ಅವನನ್ನು ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಎಂದು ಕರೆದರು. ಅಪರಾಧಿಯು ತಾನು ಅಪರಾಧಿ ಎಂದು ಬಿಷಪ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿದನು. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಅವನನ್ನು ಹೊರಗೆ ಹೋಗು ನಾಯಿ ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಬಿಷಪ್ ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರಿಗೆ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಕ್ಯಾಂಡಲ್ ಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊರತಂದು ಬೆಳಗಿಸಲು ಹೇಳಿದ. ಅವಳು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸೂಪ್, ಚೀಸ್, ಮಟನ್ ಮತ್ತು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಬ್ರೆಡ್ ಅನ್ನು ಬಡಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಅಪರಾಧಿ ಗಬಗಬತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಭೋಜನದ ನಂತರ ಬಿಷಪ್ ಅಪರಾಧಿಯನ್ನು ಗ್ಯಾಲಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸಲು ಕಾರಣವೇನು ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದರು. ಅಪರಾಧಿ ತನ್ನ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವಳ ಏಳು ಮಕ್ಕಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಅವಳು ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯದಿಂದ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಆಹಾರವಿಲ್ಲ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಡಲು ಕೆಲಸವಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಹಸಿವಿನಿಂದ ಬಳಲುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬ್ರೆಡ್ ಕದ್ದನು. ಆತನನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ಗ್ಯಾಲಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಅವರು ಅವನನ್ನು ಕಾಡು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಯಂತೆ ಬಂಧಿಸಿದ್ದರು.
ಅಪರಾಧಿ ತುಂಬಾ ದಣಿದಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅವನು ತಕ್ಷಣ ನಿದ್ರಿಸಿದನು. ಅವನು ಮಧ್ಯರಾತ್ರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಚ್ಚರಗೊಂಡನು. ಅವನು ತಮ್ಮ ಹತ್ತೊಂಬತ್ತು ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ನೆನಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡನು. ಹಲವು ಬಾರಿ ತಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸಿದ್ದ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಬಾರಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಬಿದ್ದಾಗಲೂ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯ ಆತನ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಜೈಲಿನಿಂದ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆಯಾದಾಗ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಕೇಳಿದನು. ಆದರೆ ಯಾರೂ ಅವನನ್ನು ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಲು ಸಿದ್ಧರಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಜೀನ್ ವಾಲ್ಜೀನ್ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸಾಮಾನುಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕದಿಯಲು ಯೋಚಿಸಿದನು. ಬಿಷಪ್ ಮಲಗಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಅವನು ನೋಡಿದನು. ಇದ್ದಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಂತೆ, ಜೀನ್ ವಾಲ್ಜೀನ್ ಬೀರುಗೆ ಹೋದನು ಮತ್ತು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸಾಮಾನುಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಕಿಟಕಿಯಿಂದ ಹಾರಿ ಓಡಿಹೋದನು.
ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ, ಬ್ಯಾಪ್ಟಿಸ್ಟ್ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿ ಕಳ್ಳತನವಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಬಿಷಪ್ಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿದಳು. ಬಿಷಪ್ ತುಂಬಾ ದುಃಖಿತನಾಗಿದ್ದನು ಮತ್ತು ಅವನು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸಾಮಾನುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಹಳ ಸಮಯದಿಂದ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಅದು ಬಡವರಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿತ್ತು. ಅಷ್ಟರಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಗಿಲು ತಟ್ಟಿತು. ಒಬ್ಬ ಸೇವಕ ಮತ್ತು ನಾಲ್ವರು ಪೊಲೀಸರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಅಪರಾಧಿಯನ್ನು ಬಂಧಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಪೊಲೀಸರು ಆರೋಪಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದರು. ರಾತ್ರಿಯನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕಳೆದ ಅಪರಾಧಿಗೆ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸಾಮಾನುಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಬಿಷಪ್ ಸೇವಕನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಪೊಲೀಸರು ಆರೋಪಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಮಾಡಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಬಿಷಪ್ ಅಪರಾಧಿಗೆ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯ ಕ್ಯಾಂಡಲ್‌ಸ್ಟಿಕ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಶಾಂತಿಯಿಂದ ಹೋಗುವಂತೆ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಬಿಷಪ್ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬರಲು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಒಳಗೆ ಬರಬಹುದು ಮತ್ತು ಮುಂಭಾಗದ ಬಾಗಿಲಿನಿಂದ ಹೊರಗೆ ಹೋಗಬಹುದು. ಬಾಗಿಲುಗಳು ಹಗಲು ರಾತ್ರಿ ತೆರೆದಿರುತ್ತವೆ. ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯಾಗಲು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸುವುದಾಗಿ ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡುವಂತೆ ಬಿಷಪ್ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅಪರಾಧಿ ಗದ್ಗದಿತನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಾಗುತ್ತೇನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕಾಡು ಮೃಗವಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ನಂತರ ಜೀನ್ ವಾಲ್ಜೀನ್ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ನಡೆಸಿದನು. ತುಳಿತಕ್ಕೊಳಗಾದ, ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾದ ಮತ್ತು ನಿರ್ಗತಿಕರಿಗಾಗಿ ಅವನು ಜೀವನಪೂರ್ತಿ ಶ್ರಮಿಸಿದನು.
The Noble Bishop Summary in English:
The Noble Bishop was a kind hearted man. He is seated for dinner and his sister, Baptistine, is ready to serve. Just then a convict enters the room and introduces himself as Jean Valjean. He has been imprisoned for nineteen years. He had walked for miles. He had not eaten anything for three days and asked for them-food. Bishop told his sister to put on another plate and arrange a bed. Fear with the order she was kept.
Bishop called him a friend. The Convict told The Bishop that he was a convict. Everybody told him to get out and call him a dog. Bishop asked his sister to bring out the silver candlesticks and light them. She serves them soup, cheese, mutton, and a large loaf of bread. The convict devours.
After the dinner Bishop asked the convict what made him live in the galleys. Convict told his story. He had lived with his sister and her seven children. She was ill and they had no food and no work to do. The children were starving. So he stole some bread. He was caught and sent to the galleys. They had chained him like a wild animal.
The convict was so tired that he felt asleep immediately. He woke up in the middle of the night. He remembered his nineteen years. He had tried to escape many times. Each time he was caught, the court had increased his sentence. Once he was free he asked for work. But no one was willing to take him. Jean Valjean thought about the silverware. He saw that bishop was sleeping. Suddenly, Jean Valjean went to the cupboard, and took the silverware and jumped out of the window and ran away.
In the morning, the Baptist told the Bishop that the silver was stolen. Bishop was very sad and told that he had the silverware a long time with wrongfully. It belonged to the poor. Just then, there was a knock at the door. The convict is bound and entranced with a servant and four policemen. The police caught the convict. Bishop told the servant that he had given the silverware to convict who had spent the night there. So the police release the convict and let him go.
Bishop gives the convict the silver candlesticks and ask him to go in peace. Bishop tells him to come again. He can always come in and go out the front door. The doors are open day and night. Bishop asks him to promise him that he will use the silver to become an honest man. Convict sobs and promises to become a human again and not a wild beast. Later Jean Valjean led the life of an honest man. He strove for the cause of the oppressed, downtrodden and destitute.
