Know about the Poet:
James Russell Lowell (1819 – 1891) was an American poet. Lowell believed that the poet played an important role as a prophet. He also believed that poetry is a social reform.
Hence, he used poetry to reform. Lowell graduated from Harvard College in 1838 and went on to earn a law degree from Harvard Law School. He published his first collection of poetry in 1842.
Poem text:
A stranger came one night to Yussouf’s tent,
Saying, “Behold one outcast and in dread,
Against whose life the bow of power is bent,
Who flies, and hath not where to lay his head;
I come to thee for shelter and for food,
To Yussouf, called through all our tribes, “The Good.”
“The tent is mine,” said Yussouf, “but no more
Than it is God’s; come in, and be at peace;
Freely shalt thou partake of all my store
As I of His who buildeth over these
Our tents His glorious roof of night and day,
And at whose door none ever yet heard Nay.”
So Yussouf entertained his guest that night,
And, waking him ere day, said: “Here is gold,
My swiftest horse is saddled for thy flight,
Depart before the prying day grow bold.”
As one lamp lights another, nor grows less,
So nobleness enkindleth nobleness:
That inward light the stranger’s face made grand,
Which shines from all self-conquest; kneeling low,
He bowed his forehead upon Yussouf’s hand,
Sobbing : “O Sheik, I cannot leave thee so;
I will repay thee: all this thou hast done
Unto that Ibrahim who slew thy son!”
“Take thrice the gold,”said Yussouf, “for with thee
Into the desert, never to return,
My one black thought shall ride away from me :
First-born, for whom by day and night I yearn,
Balanced and just are all of God’s decrees;
Thou art avenged, my first-born, sleep in peace!”

Stanza 1
ಒಂದು ರಾತ್ರಿ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಅವರ ಡೇರೆಗೆ ಅಪರಿಚಿತರು ಬಂದರು. ಅವರು ಬಹಿಷ್ಕೃತರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಶತ್ರುಗಳು ಅವನನ್ನು ಬೆನ್ನಟ್ಟುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರು ಯೂಸುಫ್‌ಗೆ ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ರಾತ್ರಿಯಾದರೂ ಆಶ್ರಯ ಮತ್ತು ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದರು. ಬುಡಕಟ್ಟು ಜನಾಂಗದವರು ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಅವರನ್ನು “ಗುಡ್” ಎಂದು ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಉಲ್ಲೇಖಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುವ ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡಿದರು. ಟೆಂಟ್ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ದೇವರಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು ಎಂದರು. ಮತ್ತು ಅವರು ದೇವರ ಮೇಲೆ ಗುಡಾರವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಗುಡಾರ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದ್ದು, ಹಗಲು ರಾತ್ರಿ ಎನ್ನದೇ ಭವ್ಯವಾದ ಸೂರು ಕಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ದೇವರು ಎಂದರು.

ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಅಪರಿಚಿತನ ಕಡೆಗೆ ತನ್ನ ದಯೆಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಿದನು. ಅವನು ಅಪರಿಚಿತನಿಗೆ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಚಿನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟನು. ಸೂರ್ಯ ಉದಯಿಸುವ ಮುನ್ನ ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಓಡಿಹೋಗುವಂತೆ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಂಡನು. ದಯೆ ಜನರನ್ನು ಬದಲಾಯಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದು ಇತರರ ಮೇಲೂ ದಯೆಯನ್ನು ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಇಬ್ರಾಹಿಂ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಅವರ ದಯೆಯಿಂದ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿತರಾದರು. ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಮಗನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಈತ. ತಾನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ತಾಪಪಟ್ಟು ಕ್ಷಮೆ ಕೇಳಿದನು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಅವನು ಯೂಸುಫ್‌ನ ಕೈಯ ಮೇಲೆ ತಲೆಬಾಗಿ ಅವನ ಬಳಿ ಏನಿದ್ದರೂ ಮರುಪಾವತಿ ಮಾಡುವುದಾಗಿ ಭರವಸೆ ನೀಡಿದನು.
Stanza 5
ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಇಬ್ರಾಹಿಂನನ್ನು ಮೂರು ಬಾರಿ ಮೊತ್ತದ ಚಿನ್ನದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬಿಡಲು ಕೇಳಿದನು. ಈಗ ಒಂದು ಕಪ್ಪು ಆಲೋಚನೆಯನ್ನು ತೆರವುಗೊಳಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಮಗನಿಗಾಗಿ ಹಗಲಿರುಳು ಹಂಬಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ ಎಂದು ಇಬ್ರಾಹಿಂಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಆದರೆ ಆ ನಿರ್ದಿಷ್ಟ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ, ಅವರು ಕೋಪಗೊಳ್ಳಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಬದಲಿಗೆ ಚಟ ಚಿನ್ನವನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದರು. ತನ್ನ ಮಗನ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ಸೇಡು ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಆಲೋಚನೆಯನ್ನು ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿದ್ದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಯೂಸುಫ್ ಅಪರಿಚಿತನಿಗೆ ಧನ್ಯವಾದ ಹೇಳಿದನು.
Summary in English:
Stanza 1
A stranger came to Yussouf’s tent one night. He said that he was an outcast. Enemies were chasing him. He asked Yussouf for shelter and food, at least for the night. The poet also mentions that Yussouf was called “The Good” by the tribes.
Stanza 2
Yussouf promised to help out. He said that everything, including the tent, belonged to God. And he said that he had just built a tent on God. He said that he had built the tent, God had built the glorious roof of the day and night.
Stanza 3
Yussouf showed his kindness towards a stranger. He gave some gold and a horse to stranger. He asked him to run away from here before the sun arise. Kindness changes people. It inflicts kindness on others as well.
Stanza 4
Ibrahim was greatly influenced by the kindness of Yussouf. He is the person who killed Yussouf’ son. He regretted what he did and asked for forgiveness. Also he bowed his head over Yussouf’s hand and promised to repay him whatever he had.
Stanza 5
Yussouf asked Ibrahim to leave along with the gold of the sum of thrice. He told him that a black thought was cleared now. He told Ibrahim that He was the only yearned for his son day and night. But at that particular moment, he was not angry, but offered addiction gold Instead. Yussouf thanked the stranger for abandoning the idea of avenging his son’s death.
