What is infinitive in English grammar?

What is an infinitive?

An infinitive is a form of a verb that can be used as a noun, adjective, or adverb. They Are often formed by the base verb with the word to added in front.

Types of infinitives:

1. Full infinitives (to-infinitives)

2. Bare infinitives (zero infinitives)

There are two main types of infinitives. First is full infinitives, also known as to-infinitives, which use the word to before the base form of a verb. Second is bare infinitives, also known as zero infinitives, which use only the base form of a verb without to.

1. Full infinitives (to-infinitives)

You can create a full infinitive by taking the base form of a verb and adding to in front of it.

Examples:

Priya went to buy new book. 

He is writing this email to tell you about meeting.

Did you come to college to study or to party?

Smartphones are easy to use with practice.

2. Bare infinitives (zero infinitives)

Bare infinitives, also known as zero infinitives, are formed without ‘to’. You simply use the base form of a verb within a sentence.

Examples:

Suma can’t speak to you.

He should give her some money.

I might stay another night in the hostel.

They must leave before 11.00 a.m.
