The Bird of Happiness summary in English:
In a place in Tibet, there were no trees or green grass, causing a lot of problems like hunger and cold for the people. They didn’t know the word “Happiness,” but they believed it was somewhere in the world and wished to find it.
The elders thought happiness was a lovely bird on a snowy mountain in the far east. People hoped to find joy wherever the bird went, but their searches were unsuccessful. The belief was that the Bird of Happiness was protected by three powerful monsters, capable of harm by blowing through their long beards.
Wangjia, a brave boy from the area, was tasked with finding the Bird of Happiness. The village girl offered barley wine, and mothers blessed him with barley grains on his head. Wangjia embarked on a journey to the East, where he discovered a vast mountain and encountered an old monster with a black beard.
The monster, questioning the boy with cries resembling a crow, asked why he dared to come. Wangjia, tearfully, expressed his quest for the Bird of Happiness. In response, the monster demanded Wangjia to kill Lousang’s mother to obtain the bird. Refusing this, Wangjia was then compelled to undertake a daunting journey of 900 miles. The monster, using his beard like a powerful force, transformed the once smooth road into a rugged terrain of sharp stones. Despite Wangjia’s torn boots, injured feet, and battered hands, he bravely faced the challenge. Fueled by the thought of his people eagerly awaiting his return with the Bird of Happiness, Wangjia found the courage to crawl forward. Disregarding his clothes and injuries, he persevered and successfully completed his arduous journey.
English summary of the lesson The Bird of Happiness
Encountering another monster, this one with a brown beard, Wangjia faced a distressing demand to poison old Gaffer Silong. Faced with the threat of starvation if he refused, Wangjia reluctantly complied. In the process, Sangjia lost his bread bag and endured thirst. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, he controlled his hunger and pain, completing his second journey. Finally reaching a river, Wangjia drank water. But the toll on his body was evident as he became emaciated, reduced to skin and bone.
The third monster, with a white beard, demanded Wangjia to bring Bhima’s eyeballs, threatening to gouge out his own if he refused. True to his principles, Wangjia rejected the monstrous request, losing his eyesight as a consequence. Undeterred, he persevered, crawling 900 miles in the direction of the rising sun. In a moment of joy, Wangjia heard the loving voice of the Bird of Happiness. Overwhelmed, he pleaded with the bird to come his village. The Bird of Happiness, filled with love, gently touched Wangjia and sang for him. Miraculously, Wangjia regained his eyesight, his wounds healed, and he grew stronger.
After enjoying some dried meat and cake, the bird guided him to the mountain top in his village. With three cries, the golden sun emerged. A forest appeared, flowers blossomed, green rivers and fields emerged, and rabbits danced while larks sang. In this way, Wangjia, aided by the Bird of Happiness, brought an end to the sufferings of his people.
