ಮೆಟ್ರೋಪಾಲಿಟನ್ ನಗರಗಳ ಬಹುತೇಕ ರೈಲ್ವೇ ನಿಲ್ದಾಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾರತದ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತ ನಿತ್ಯವೂ ತಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸದ ಸ್ಥಳಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಕರಿಂದ ತುಂಬಿರುತ್ತದೆ. 21 ವರ್ಷದ ಕಾಲ್ ಸೆಂಟರ್ ಎಕ್ಸಿಕ್ಯುಟಿವ್ ರೋಮಾ ತಲ್ರೆಜಾ ಬಾಗಿಲಿನ ಬಳಿ ಇರುವ ಮಹಿಳಾ ಕಂಪೋರ್ಟ್‌ಮೆಂಟ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ನೆಲೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಪ್ರಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

ರೈಲು ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ಅವಳು ತಳ್ಳಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಳು ಮತ್ತು ಸಮತೋಲನವನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡಳು ಮತ್ತು ಕೋಚ್‌ನಿಂದ ಹೊರಹಾಕಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಳು. ಅದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರ ಮಿಶ್ರಾ, ನಿರುದ್ಯೋಗಿ ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಡ್ರಾಪ್ಔಟ್, ವಿರುದ್ಧ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ರೈಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದವರು ಇದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದರು.

ತಕ್ಷಣವೇ ಆತ ಯಾವುದೇ ಯೋಚನೆ ಮಾಡದೆ ಕೆಂಪು ತುರ್ತು ಸರಪಣಿಯನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದನು. “ನಾವು ಹೋಗಿ ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡೋಣ”, ಅವರು ಕೂಗಿದರು ಆದರೆ ಯಾರೂ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲು ಮುಂದಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನು ಇನ್ನೂ ಚಲಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವ ರೈಲಿನಿಂದ ಜಿಗಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಹುಡುಗಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲು ಬಹಳ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಹಿಂದಕ್ಕೆ ಓಡಿದನು.

ಕೆಲವು ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಕಾಲ ಓಡಿದ ನಂತರ, ಅವನು ಟ್ರ್ಯಾಕ್ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಡುಗಿಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡು, “ಬೆಹಂಜಿ ಆಪ್ ದೀಕ್ ಹೈ?” (ಸಹೋದರಿ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದ್ದೀರಾ?) ಆದರೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆತ ಯುವತಿಯ ತಲೆಯ ಹಿಂದೆ ರಕ್ತ ಹರಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದನು. ಅವನು ಹುಡುಗಿಯನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಪೊದೆಸಸ್ಯವನ್ನು ದಾಟಿದನು. ನಂತರ ಅವನು ರಸ್ತೆಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡನು. “ನನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರಿಗೆ ಗಾಯವಾಗಿದೆ” ಎಂದು ಅವರು ವಾಹನ ಚಾಲಕರಿಗೆ ವಿನಂತಿಸಿದರು ಆದರೆ ಯಾರೂ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರನು ಭರವಸೆಯನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾರಂಭಿಸಿದಾಗ, ಟೆಂಪೋ-ಟ್ರಕ್ ಚಾಲಕ, ಗುಜರಾತ್ ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಮಧ್ಯವಯಸ್ಕ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ, ಹುಡುಗಿಯನ್ನು ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗೆ ಕರೆದೊಯ್ಯಲು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದನು. ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಟ್ರಾಫಿಕ್ ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ, “ಹುಡುಗಿಯನ್ನು ಐರೋಲಿಗೆ ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗು” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಆದರೆ ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರ ಒಪ್ಪಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಐರೋಲಿ ಕನಿಷ್ಠ 10 ಕಿಲೋಮೀಟರ್ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ನನಗೆ ತಿಳಿದಿರುವ ಹತ್ತಿರದ ಸ್ಥಳವಿದೆ “ಎಂದು ಅವರು ಹೇಳಿದರು.

10 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ನಂತರ ಅವರು ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ತಲುಪಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ಮತ್ತು ಸಲಕರಣೆಗಳ ಕೊರತೆ, ಕರ್ತವ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವೈದ್ಯರು ಮೂಲಭೂತ ಪ್ರಥಮ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹತ್ತಿರದ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಗೆ ತೆರಳುವಂತೆ ಅವರು ಸಲಹೆ ನೀಡಿದರು.

ರೋಮಾಗೆ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರನು ಅವಳ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಯಾರನ್ನು ಕರೆದು ಮಾಹಿತಿ ನೀಡಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದನು. ಆಕೆ ತನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರ ದಿನೇಶನ ದೂರವಾಣಿ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ನೀಡಿ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾಹೀನಳಾದಳು. ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರ್ ದೂರವಾಣಿ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಮನನ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡರು ಮತ್ತು ಟೆಂಪೋ-ಟ್ರಕ್ ಚಾಲಕ ತನ್ನ ಮೊಬೈಲ್ ಅನ್ನು ದಿನೇಶ್ ಗೆ ಕರೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಕೊಟ್ಟನು.

ಉಲ್ಲಾಸ ನಗರ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ಮಾರಾಟ ಕೇಂದ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾರ್ಕೆಟಿಂಗ್ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಮುಗಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ದಿನೇಶ್ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ತಲುಪಲು ತನ್ನ ಮೋಟಾರ್ ಸೈಕಲ್ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಧಾವಿಸಿದ. ಅವರು ಡಿವೈನ್ ಮಲ್ಟಿ ಸ್ಪೆಷಾಲಿಟಿ ಆಸ್ಪತ್ರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಶೋಧನಾ ಕೇಂದ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದರು. ರೋಮಾ ಗಾಯದ ಪ್ರಮಾಣವನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ ಡಾ. ಅನಿಲ್ ಅಗರ್ವಾಲ್ ಯಾವುದೇ ಕಾಗದದ ಕೆಲಸವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ತಕ್ಷಣ ಐಸಿಯುಗೆ ಸೇರಿಸಿದರು.

ವೈದ್ಯರು ಎಕ್ಸ್-ರೇ ತೆಗೆದರು. ರೋಮಾ ಅಪಾಯದಿಂದ ಪಾರಾಗಿದ್ದಳು. ಯಾರೂ ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡದಿದ್ದರೆ ಅವಳು ರಕ್ತಸ್ರಾವವಾಗಿ ಸಾಯಬಹುದಿತ್ತು ಎಂದು ವೈದ್ಯರು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಆ ರಾತ್ರಿ ರೋಮಾ ಕಣ್ಣು ತೆರೆದಾಗ, ಅವಳ ಸಹೋದರ ಮತ್ತು ನಿಶ್ಚಿತ ವರ ಅವಳ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು. ಅವಳು ಅಷ್ಟೇನೂ ಮಾತನಾಡಲಾರಳು, ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ತಲೆಯಾಡಿಸಿದಳು ಮತ್ತು ಮತ್ತೆ ನಿದ್ರಿಸಿದಳು.

ರೋಮಾಳ ಸಹೋದರ ತನ್ನ ಸೆಲ್ ಫೋನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಕೈಚೀಲ ಕಾಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರನು ರೋಮಾ ಬಿದ್ದ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ಪುನಃ ನೋಡಿದನು. ರೋಮಾ ಅವರ ಕೆಲವು ವಸ್ತುಗಳು ಪತ್ತೆಯಾಗಿವೆ ಎಂದು ರೈಲ್ವೇ ಉದ್ಯೋಗಿಯೊಬ್ಬರು ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಕೆಲವೇ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರೋಮಾ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಚೇತರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಳು ಮತ್ತು ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನು ಪಣಕ್ಕಿಟ್ಟ ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರನಿಗೆ ತಾನು ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಮರುಪಾವತಿ ಮಾಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದಳು.

ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರನ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಮುಂಬೈನ ಜನರು ಭಯಭೀತರಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಮತ್ತು ಅವರು ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಪೊಲೀಸರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಹಾಕಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಭಯದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರು. ಬಾಲೇಶ್ವರನು ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಏಕೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದನು? “ಆ ದಿನ ಅದು ರೋಮ್. ನಾಳೆ ನೀವು ಅಥವಾ ನಾನು ಟ್ರ್ಯಾಕ್, ರಕ್ತಸ್ರಾವ ಮತ್ತು ಏಕಾಂಗಿಯಾಗಿರಬಹುದು.

Summary in English:

In most of the railway stations of metropolitan cities and around India are always over crowded with commuters, who travels to their work place daily. Roma Talreja a 21 year call centre executive try to settle herself in the ladies comportment near the door.

While the train was moving fast, she got pushed and lost her balance and thrown out of the coach. At the same time Baleshwar Mishra, an unemployed High school dropout, who was travelling in another train speeding in the opposite direction saw this.

Immediately he grabbed the red emergency chain without any thinking. “Let’s go and help her”, he shouted but nobody moved to help. He jumped off the still moving train and ran back very fast to help the girl.

After running for few minutes, he found the girl beside the track and asked, “Behanji app theek hai?” (sister are you okay?). But there was no response. He saw the blood flowing behind the young woman’s head. He lifted the girl and crossed some shrubbery. Then he found the road. “My sister is injured” he requested the motorists but no one stopped.

Just when Baleshwar had begun to loss hope, a tempo-truck driver, a middle aged man who spoke Gujarat, helped him to take the girl to the hospital. On the way, a traffic police man said, “Take the girl to Airoli”. But Baleshwar disagreed. Because Airoli was at least 10 kilo meters away. “There is a closer place I know of” he said.

After 10 minutes they reached a small hospital. But lack of staff and equipment, the on-duty doctor give only the basic first aid. They advised them to move nearby hospital.

On the way Roma got conscious, Baleshwar asked her name and whom he could call to give the information. She gave her brother Dinesh’s phone number and became unconscious. Baleshwar memorized the phone number and the tempo-truck driver gave his mobile to call Dinesh.

Dinesh who was closing his day at his marketing job at a retail outlet in Ulhasnaga, rushed toward his motorcycle to reach the hospital. They arrived to Divine Multi-specialty Hospital and Research center. Seeing the extent of Roma’s injury, Dr. Anil Agarwal admitted her immediately to the ICU without any paper work.

Doctor took X-rays. Roma was out of danger. Doctor said that if nobody had helped her she could have bled to death. When Roma opened her eyes that night, her brother and fiancé were by her side. She could barely speak, just nodded and fell asleep again.

Roma’s brother told that her cell phone and handbag were missing. So Baleshwar revisited the spot where Roma had fallen. A railway employee told that some of Roma’s belongings had been found. In a few days Roma made a full recovery and said that she could never repay Baleshwar who risked his life.

According to Baleshwar the people of Mumbai were afraid and they fear getting trapped in the courts and the police. Why did Baleshwar help her ? “That day it was Rom. Tomorrow it could be you or me by the tracks, bleeding and alone.”
