Activity 28: Complaining and requesting

Activity 28.1: Read the conversation. Take roles and practise.

Situation 1   At the office of Mr. Bumble   Master: I’m sorry to say this, but these kids are going out. Mr. Bumble: What! are you trying to tell me? Master: It’s true, sir. Mr. Bumble: Look, today he asked for more. How dare? Who do you mean? Master: That wretched boy, Oliver is out of control.
Situation 2   At a Bank. A customer is talking to the manager.   Customer: I’m afraid. I’ve got to complain. Manager: Please, be calm. Why don’t you sit, please? Customer: I’m sorry to say this, manager. Almost for half-an-hour I’ve been waiting to get money for my cheque. Manager: Please bear with us. See, it’s all due to network failure. Not just here, all over the country.

Activity 28.2: Take roles and practise.

1. Suppose your father asks you to go and call the doctor, and you are busy with your project, so you decide to complain to your mother. Make up the dialogue and practice.

Answer:

Father: Kiran go to hospital and call Dr. Pradeep to our house.

Kiran: Dad I busy in a project work.

Father: First do what I told.

Kiran: Mom see how father is disturbing me.

Mother: He is doing project work. Call the doctor later.

Father: No. he need to go now. It’s very urgent.

Mother: Don’t worry. I will send uncle.

Father: Ok carry on.

2. Imagine there is a bus-stop close to your school. You would like to complain against this with the transport authorities. Write the dialogue and practice.

Answer:

Student: Excuse me, sir.

Transport authority: Yes, please, how can I help you.

Student: Sir, please change the location of bus-stop close to my school.

Transport authority: What is the problem?

Student: Sir, because of it there is lot of disturbance in our class room.

Transport authority: But that bus-stop helps you all to go school and home.

Student: Sure, sir. But we are unable to concentrate on classes and learning.

Transport authority: Ok, don’t worry. I will surely solve your problem.

Student: Thank you so much, sir.

Situation 1   Siddhartha is talking to his father, the king, after the swan was decided to be his.   Siddhartha: Thank you for the judgement. Could I have word with you, Your Majesty? King: Come on, Prince, say it. Siddhartha: Do you mind if I keep the swan in my own chamber, please? King: No, we don’t mind. You can keep the swan fully protected. Is there anything else? Siddhartha: Yes, one more request. King: Say it, dear prince. Siddhartha: I’m sorry to trouble you, but I need the palace veterinary doctor to attend to this swan. King: Your request is granted.
Situation 2   Natesh works in an office. He is very busy. Diwakar is his colleague.   Natesh Do you think you could help me? Diwakar: Of course. Tell me what I can do? Natesh: Would you arrange these files in order? Diwakar: Certainly. Take it easy.

1. You have missed the last bus to home.

Answer: Manoj, I missed the last bus to home. Will you please drop me home?

2. You are bored watching TV.

3. Your scooter will not start.

Answer: Sir, I think there is some problem with my scooter. Could you please check it up and repair it, as I have to attend to an urgent work?
