The Wise Crab   In a thick forest, two banyan trees stood side by side. Thousands of cranes and a big black snake lived there. When the cranes went away in search of food, the snake ate the baby cranes. When the cranes returned, they found their babies missing. They knew that the snake had eaten them and would become sad. One day, a crab saw some cranes crying. He asked them as to why they were crying. The cranes said there was a big black snake living in the banyan tree who ate their babies when they went to find food.   Mongooses and cranes eat crabs. So, the crab wanted to get rid of both his enemies. He told the cranes a big mongoose lived close by that loved fish. The crab advised the cranes to put a few fish all along the path from the mongoose’s hole to the banyan tree and to see what happened. The cranes did as they were told.   The mongoose ate up the fish on the path and, when he reached the snake, he killed it. After that, he got greedy and went up and ate the baby cranes too.
