Reading passage for high school students

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow: 2×2=4

Vijay and Raju were friends. On a holiday they went walking into a forest, enjoying the beauty of nature. Suddenly they saw a bear coming at them. They became frightened. Ranju, who knew all about climbing trees, ran up to a tree and climbed up quickly. He didn’t think of vijay. Vijay had no idea how to climb the tree. Vijay thought for a second. He had heard animals don’t prefer dead bodies, so he fell to the ground and held his breath. The bear sniffed him and thought he was dead. So, it went on its way.

a) What did Raju do when he saw the bear?

Answer: Raju and Vijay saw the bear and frightened. Raju planned to climb a tree to get protection from that bear. Because he had learnt climbing tree. But he didn’t think of vijay.

b) How did Vijay escape from the bear?

Answer: Actually Vijay had not learnt climbing tree like Raju. He knew that animals will not attack on dead body. So he pretended to fell on the ground and held his breath. The bear smelled Vijay’s body and thought he was dead. It went without hurting him.

Introduction:

August 15th is celebrated as Independence Day all over India. This was the day in 1947 when India got her freedom from British rule. Independence Day reminds us about the struggle and sacrifices of the Freedom fighters.

Our school celebrated Independence Day with great pleasure. On the day, the students went to school early in the morning dressed in school uniform. The honourable president, chief guest and all the teachers were present there. At about 8 a.m. the National Flag was hoisted by the president. The function started with the national song. This was followed by speeches, patriotic songs and other cultural programmes.

At last, the president and the chief guest made speeches in which they called upon the students to build a new India of our dreams. Then the Headmaster gave a vote of thanks. The function came to a close. Then sweets were distributed among the people present on the occasion.

Conclusion:

Independence Day celebration in school go beyond mere festivities. By celebrating freedom and instilling a deep sense of patriotism in the hearts of students. This programme inspired for shaping young minds into responsible citizens.
