cOMMON MISTAKES IN VERB:

1. Kailash told her that he will sing. (incorrect)

     Kailash told her that he would sing. (correct)

Reason: When the main verb is in the past tense the verb in the subordinate clause should also be in the past tense. When the principal verb is in the present tense, the verb in the subordinate clause can be in any tense.

2. Scientist said that the earth resolved around the sun. (incorrect)

     Scientist said that the earth resolves around the sun. (correct)

Reason: To talk about general truths, we always use the present tense.

3. The driver-cum-conductor have come. (incorrect)

     The driver-cum-conductor has come. (correct)

Reason: Here the nouns ‘driver’ and ‘conductor’ refer to the same person, so we use a singular verb.

4. I am so strong that I may fight with thief. (incorrect)

     I am so strong that I can fight with thief. (correct)

Reason: To talk about ability we use can, not may.

5. Tell me why are you scolding Santosh. (incorrect)

     Tell me why you are scolding Santosh. (correct)

Reason: In indirect questions we put the auxiliary verb after the noun. Note that we do not use question mark in indirect questions.

6. Arpita as well as her brothers are very active in sports. (incorrect)

    Arpita as well as her brothers is very active in sports. (correct)

Reason: When the noun that precedes ‘as well as’ is in the singular, the verb should also be in the singular.

cOMMON ERRORS IN ENGLISH GRAMMAR:

7. I am studying since morning. (incorrect)

    I have been studying since morning. (correct)

Reason: We use perfect continuous tenses with the prepositions ‘since’.

8. She play chess in the college. (incorrect)

    She plays chess in the college. (correct)

Reason: In simple present, third person singular noun or pronoun uses plural verb.

9. The group meet every week. (incorrect)

     The group meets every week. (correct)

Reason: Collective nouns are words that imply more than one person but are considered singular and take a singular verb. Some examples are group, team, committee, family, and class.

10. Each of the participants were willing to be recorded. (incorrect)

       Each of the participants was willing to be recorded. (correct)

Reason: The words each, each one, either, neither, everyone, everybody, anyone, anybody, nobody, somebody, someone, and no one are singular and require a singular verb.
