ಈ ಕವಿತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕವಿಯು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ತಾನು ನಡೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ, ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಮರವನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ನೋಡಲು ನಿಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಮರವು ತುಂಬಾ ಹಳೆಯದಾಗಿತ್ತು, ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ಒಂದು ಶತಮಾನದಷ್ಟು ಹಳೆಯದಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅವನು ಅದನ್ನು ಕತ್ತರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ, ಹರಿತವಾದ ಕೊಡಲಿಯು ಹೊಳೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ತೊಗಟೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಆಳವಾಗಿ ಬಡಿಯಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಹಳದಿ ಮರದ ಚೂರುಗಳು ಗಾಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾರಿದವು.

The Axe in the Wood summary in English:
In this poem poet says that once he was walking, that time he stopped to watch a man cutting a tree. That tree was very old, big and it was a century old. As he was cutting it, the sharp axe was shining and it struck deep inside the bark and the yellow wooden chips flew in the air.
The poet remembers how he liked the wood cutter’s balanced stance and movements of his bright axes as he swung it. A man who cuts a tree is a compelling sight, people feel they must watch him. The people ask certain questions, of protest, which will happen to them by chance. The poet thinks he knows the answers to those objections.
People have some questions about the tree. They are Tree is very old, dangerous and it could fall any moment. Some thought that this tree is very useful and gives timber in a stack. That would be better than letting the tree grow. Those were the questions that came to the spot of idle watchers.
But the poet compresses the death of the tree to the death of thousands of men. that Men. It shows that trees are life. Trees are gift by our ancestors. We should preserve that for next generation.
