‘The Swan and The Princes’ ಒಂದು ಜಾನಪದ ನಾಟಕ. ಕಥೆಯು ಕಪಿಲವಸ್ತುವಿನ ರಾಜ ಸುದ್ದೋಧನ, ಕಪಿಲವಸ್ತುವಿನ ರಾಜಕುಮಾರ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನ ಸೋದರಸಂಬಂಧಿ ದೇವದತ್ತ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆಯನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಂಡಿದೆ. ಈ ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಬ್ಬರು ರಾಜಕುಮಾರರ ನಡುವಿನ ಸಣ್ಣ ವಿವಾದವನ್ನು ಚರ್ಚಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ರಾಜನ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳು ಸಹ ಇದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವದತ್ ತೋಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಟವಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ದೇವ್ ದತ್ ಒಂದು ಹಂಸವನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆದನು ಮತ್ತು ಅದು ನೆಲದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಿದ್ದಿತು. ಇದನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ ಅದರ ಗಾಯವನ್ನು ತೊಳೆದು, ಔಷಧಿ ಹಚ್ಚಿ ಪ್ರಾಣ ಉಳಿಸಿದ.
ಅದರ ನಂತರ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಹುಡುಗರು ಈದು ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಜಗಳವಾಡಿದರು, ಹಂಸದ ಮಾಲೀಕತ್ವವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಪಾದಿಸಿದರು. ಹಂಸವನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆದುರುಳಿಸಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದು ತನಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ದೇವ್ ದತ್ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಹಂಸದ ಪ್ರಾಣವನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅದು ತನಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥ ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಅವರು ಹಂಸದ ಮಾಲೀಕತ್ವವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ದೇವದತ್ತನು ನ್ಯಾಯವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯಲು ಸುದ್ದೋಧನನ ನ್ಯಾಯಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದನು. ರಾಜನು ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥನನ್ನು ಕರೆದು ವಿಷಯವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದನು. ದೇವ್ ದತ್ತ ಅವನು ಹಂಸವನ್ನು ಗುಂಡು ಹಾರಿಸಿದ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹಕ್ಕು ಸಾಧಿಸಿದ ಮತ್ತು ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥನು ಹಂಸವು ತನಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ವಾದಿಸಿದನು. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅವನು ಅದರ ಜೀವವನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಉಳಿಸಿದನು. ಎರಡೂ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದವು. ತೀರ್ಪು ನೀಡುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ರಾಜನು ತನ್ನ ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯ ಸಹಾಯವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದನು. ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ಉಪಾಯ ಯೋಚಿಸಿ ಹುಡುಗರಿಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಹಂಸ ಪ್ರಕರಣವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಮೊದಲು ಅವರು ಹಂಸವನ್ನು ಸ್ಟೂಲ್ ಮೇಲೆ ಹಾಕಿದರು ಮತ್ತು ದೇವ್ ದತ್ ಅವನನ್ನು ಹಂಸವನ್ನು ಕರೆಯಲು ಕೇಳಲಾಯಿತು. ಅವನು ಅದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದನು, ಆದರೆ ಹಂಸವು ನಡುಗಿತು ಮತ್ತು ಭಯದಿಂದ ಕೂಗಿತು. ಮುಂದೆ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥನು ಹಂಸದ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಸಮಾಧಾನಪಡಿಸಿದನು ಮತ್ತು ಭಯಪಡಬೇಡ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು, ಆಗ ಹಂಸವು ಹಾರಿಹೋಗಿ ಅವನ ತೋಳುಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಕುಳಿತಿತು. ಹಂಸವು ಪ್ರಕರಣವನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿ ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಹಂಸವು ರಾಜಕುಮಾರ ಸಿದ್ಧಾರ್ಥನದು ಎಂಬ ತೀರ್ಪನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡರು.
ಈ ನಾಟಕವು ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಕರುಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ದಯೆಯ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ಒತ್ತಿಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಪ್ರಾಣಿಗಳು ಸಹ ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿವೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಕಾಳಜಿವಹಿಸುವವರ ಕಡೆಗೆ ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿವೆ.
The Swan and The Princes summary in English:
‘The Swan and The Princes’ is a folk play. The story encompasses a conversation between Suddodhana, the King of Kapilavastu, Siddharta, Prince of Kapilavastu and his cousin, Devdatta. A small dispute between the two princes has been discussed in this play. The King’s ministers are also present in the setting.
Once Siddhartha and Dev Datt were playing in the garden. Dev Datt shot a swan and it fell on ground. Siddhartha saw this and washed its wound, applied medicine and saved its life.
After that the two boys quarrelled over whom the swam belongs to each one claimed the swan’s ownership. Dev dutt claimed that the swan belonged to him as he had shot it down. But Siddhartha claimed that the swan belonged to him as he had saved its life. They could not decide the ownership of the swan.
So Dev Datt came to Suddodhana’s court to get justice and explained the matter. The King called Siddhartha and asked about the matter. Dev Datta claimed the swan because he shot it and Siddhartha argued that the swan belongs to him because he protected and saved its life. Both were correct. How to give judgement, so the king asked the help of his Chief Minister. The Chief Minister thought a plan and said to both the boys. The swan will decide the case.

First they put the swan on the stool and Dev Datt was asked to call the Swan. He did it, but the swan trembled and cried with fear. Next Siddhartha went near the swan and consoled it and said it need not fear, then the swan flew up and sat on his arms. The Chief Minister said to King that swan had decided the case. All accepted the judgement that the swan belonged to prince Siddharta.
This play emphasizes the important role of mercy and kindness towards animals. Animals, too, have feelings and are affectionate towards those who care for them.
