Q.IV Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:         1×4=4 (2×2)      8) One day, a rich merchant came to Birbal. He said to Birbal, “I have seven servants in my house. One of them has stolen my bag of precious pearls. Please find out the thief”. So Birbal went to the rich man’s house. He called all the seven servants in a room. He gave a stick to each one of them. Then he said, “These are magic sticks. Just now all these sticks are equal in length. Keep them with you and return tomorrow. If there is a thief in the house his stick will grow an inch longer by tomorrow.”

The servant who had stolen the bag of pearls was scared. He thought, “If I cut a piece of one inch from my stick, I won’t be caught”. So, he cut the stick and made it shorter by one inch. The next day Birbal collected the sticks from the servants. He found that one servant’s stick was short by an inch. Birbal pointed his finger at him and said, “Here is the thief”. The servant confessed to his crime. He returned the bag of pearls. He was sent to jail.

4) Don Anselmo was generous. Because he was a man of principles. He refused to take the extra money offered by the Americans for his land. He said the trees belonged to the children.

5) The 14th amendment to the US Constitution gave freedom to Black Americans. Mahatma Phule was working for classes society and for women’s upliftment.

6) Whenever hurdles come, we must face boldly. We should learn to face the brute. We should be worker but not shirkers. Dolma’s determination and hard work, zeal for the work is emulating.

7) ‘I am the Land’ is a poem written by Marina De Bellagenta. In this poem the poetess wants to describe the patience of the Earth. Mother earth explains the man says he owned the earth. But the earth waits. The man shouts with rage then also the earth lie patiently. The man would exploit the earth making muddy holes and the lights of the car. But the mother earth would stare these things.

The farmer ploughs the land and grow the plants. The children would come and dance on the earth. The solders come with guns and put the fence on the earth. This fence suffocates the earth. But the mother earth patiently waits. The earth challenged the man that he cannot put a fence around the planet earth.

8) The poem ‘The Song of India’ is written by V.K.Gokak. The poet wanted to sing about the Himalayas, three seas and golden rays of sun. But mother India wishes him to sing about beggar and leaper. The poet wished to sing about temples, soldiers, seers and prophets. Mother India asked him to sing about old, ignorant and helpless children.

The poet wants to sing about dams and lakes, steel mills, ship building yards and atomic age. But she forces him to sing about struggle of the past and present and also about class war. Finally, the poem ends with optimistic view, motherland sitting on the waves incarnating the supreme power to write the destiny of our nation.
