Introduction
This is an extract from Shakespeare’s play “The Merchant of Venice”. These lines are spoken by Portia, one of the main characters in the play from Act 1 Scene 1, she argues with Shylak saying why mercy is the greatest virtue of all. The poem is a sonnet having three quatrains and one couplet. There is no particular rhyme scheme.
Quality of Mercy poem text:
The quality of mercy is not strain’d;
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes.
‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown.
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway;
It is enthroned in the heart of kings;
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God’s

Quality of Mercy poem stanza wise summary in English:
Stanza 1
In the first stanza, the poet says that the quality of mercy is never affected by anything. It has come down on earth from heaven like gentle rain i.e. it is as gentle as the raindrop and is sent down on the earth by God Himself. Mercy is a blessing for both the giver and the taker. To the giver, the mercy rewards him fame, appreciation and love while to the taker, it is the lifesaver, it helps him from avoiding the punishment which he would have otherwise suffered.
Stanza 2
According to the poet, mercy is the most powerful thing in the universe. It is something that makes a king better than his crown i.e. his kingship. He walks with his scepter (his staff when moves with him to show his sovereignty) to show his power over his subjects which makes the people honor him and fear from him.
The might of the king might fill fear in the hearts of people yet his quality of mercy is better than his scepter if it is in him because it is the quality of God Himself. Thus if a king is merciful, he will be liked by the people and treated as God.
Couplet
According to the poet, when a king shows mercy, then his powers become like that of God because it will make even his enemy love and respect him. The one who will receive mercy will always remain grateful to him and the people will love him more.

ಮೊದಲ ಚರಣದಲ್ಲಿ, ಕರುಣೆಯ ಗುಣವು ಯಾವುದರಿಂದಲೂ ಪ್ರಭಾವಿತವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದು ಸೌಮ್ಯವಾದ ಮಳೆಯಂತೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಗದಿಂದ ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ, ಅಂದರೆ ಅದು ಮಳೆಹನಿಯಂತೆ ಶಾಂತವಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವರಿಂದಲೇ ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ. ಕರುಣೆಯು ಕೊಡುವವರಿಗೂ ಮತ್ತು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವವರಿಗೂ ಒಂದು ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕೊಡುವವರಿಗೆ, ಕರುಣೆಯು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಖ್ಯಾತಿ, ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ ಆದರೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವವರಿಗೆ ಅದು ಜೀವರಕ್ಷಕವಾಗಿದೆ, ಅದು ಅವನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುವ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸಲು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕವಿಯ ಪ್ರಕಾರ, ಕರುಣೆಯು ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಶಕ್ತಿಶಾಲಿ ವಸ್ತುವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ರಾಜನನ್ನು ಅವನ ಕಿರೀಟಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಅಂದರೆ ಅವನ ರಾಜತ್ವಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಉತ್ತಮಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ರಾಜದಂಡದೊಂದಿಗೆ (ಅವನ ಸಾರ್ವಭೌಮತ್ವವನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಲು ಅವನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಚಲಿಸುವಾಗ ಅವನ ಕೋಲು) ತನ್ನ ಪ್ರಜೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ತನ್ನ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸಲು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾನೆ, ಅದು ಜನರು ಅವನನ್ನು ಗೌರವಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅವನಿಂದ ಭಯಪಡುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ರಾಜನ ಶಕ್ತಿಯು ಜನರ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಭಯವನ್ನು ತುಂಬಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಅವನ ಕರುಣೆಯ ಗುಣವು ಅವನ ರಾಜದಂಡಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಉತ್ತಮವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅದು ದೇವರ ಗುಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ಒಬ್ಬ ರಾಜನು ದಯಾಮಯನಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ, ಅವನು ಜನರಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ದೇವರಂತೆ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಾನೆ.
