Oru Manushyan ಪಾಠದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಾರಾಂಶ:
ಈ ಪಾಠವು ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಅನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಒಂದು ಸಾವಿರದ ಐನೂರು ಮೈಲಿ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿದ್ದರು.
ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರಿಗೂ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನಿಗೆ ಸಂವಹನ ಮಾಡಲು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಭಾಷೆ ತಿಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವನಿಗೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮತ್ತು ಹಿಂದುಸ್ತಾನಿ ಗೊತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಈ ಭಾಷೆಗಳು ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಸ್ಥಳವು ಪರ್ವತದ ಕಣಿವೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ನಗರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಸ್ಥಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪರಾಧ ಪ್ರಮಾಣವು ತುಂಬಾ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಜನರು ದಯೆಯಿಲ್ಲದವರು ಮತ್ತು ಹಣಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಏನು ಬೇಕಾದರೂ ಮಾಡಲು ಸಿದ್ಧರಾಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವರು ಸೈನಿಕರು, ಹಣ ಕೊಡುವವರು ಮತ್ತು ಬ್ಯಾಂಕುಗಳು, ಗಿರಣಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವಾಣಿಜ್ಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾವಲುಗಾರರಾಗಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಈ ನಗರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಸಣ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ಕೊಳಕಾದ ಕೋಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರು ರಾತ್ರಿ 9:30 ರಿಂದ 11 ರವರೆಗೆ ವಲಸೆ ಕಾರ್ಮಿಕರಿಗೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಕಲಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಒಂದು ಸಂಜೆ ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ತನ್ನ ಆಹಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕಿಕ್ಕಿರಿದ ರೆಸ್ಟೋರೆಂಟ್‌ಗೆ ಹೋದರು. ಅವನಿಗೆ 11 ಆಣೆ ಪಾವತಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಆಹಾರವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿದ ನಂತರ, ತನ್ನ ಜೀವಿತಾವಧಿಯ 14 ರೂಪಾಯಿಗಳ ಉಳಿತಾಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಪರ್ಸ್ ಕಾಣೆಯಾಗಿದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಯಾರೋ ವಾಲೆಟ್ ಅನ್ನು ಕದ್ದಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಅವನು ಅರಿತುಕೊಂಡನು.
ಆದರೆ ರೆಸ್ಟೋರೆಂಟ್ ಮಾಲೀಕರು ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ತನಗೆ ಮೋಸ ಮಾಡಲು ಯತ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಆತ ಬಿಲ್ ಪಾವತಿಸುವಂತೆ ಗದರಿಸಿದ, ಆತನ ಕಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುವ ಬೆದರಿಕೆ ಹಾಕಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ರೆಸ್ಟೋರೆಂಟ್‌ನ ಇತರ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ದಯೆ ತೋರಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಮಾಲೀಕರಿಗೆ ಕೋಟ್ ಅನ್ನು ಖಾತರಿಯಂತೆ ಇರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ವಿನಂತಿಸಿದರು. ಆದರೆ ಮಾಲೀಕರು ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಕೋಟ್, ಶರ್ಟ್ ಮತ್ತು ಶೂಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಪ್ಯಾಂಟ್ ಅನ್ನು ಸಹ ತೆಗೆಯುವಂತೆ ಮಾಲೀಕರು ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್‌ನನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದಾಗ, ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ತನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಏನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಕರುಣೆಗಾಗಿ ಮನವಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಇದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ನಗುವನ್ನು ಉಂಟುಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾಲೀಕರು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಒಟ್ಟುಗೂಡಿದ 50 ಇತರ ಜನರು, ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಅನ್ನು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಕಳಚಲು ಒತ್ತಾಯಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ ಮತ್ತು “ಕೆಳಗೆ ಏನಾದರೂ ಇರಬೇಕು” ಎಂದು ಗೇಲಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು.
ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಅವಮಾನಿತರಾದರು ಮತ್ತು ತನ್ನ ಪ್ಯಾಂಟ್ ಅನ್ನು ಬಿಚ್ಚಲು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭಿಸಿದನು, ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲೂ ತಾನು ಇತರರ ಮುಂದೆ ಬೆತ್ತಲೆಯಾಗಿ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡನು. ಈ ಹಂತದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನೀಲಿ ಕಣ್ಣಿನ, ಮಸುಕಾದ ಮೈಬಣ್ಣ, ಕೆಂಪು ಟರ್ಬನ್ ಮತ್ತು ಬಿಳಿ ಪ್ಯಾಂಟ್ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ಆರು ಅಡಿಗಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಮಧ್ಯಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸಿ ಮಾಲೀಕರಿಗೆ ನೀಡಬೇಕಾದ ಮೊತ್ತವನ್ನು ಪಾವತಿಸಲು ಮುಂದಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಪರಿಚಿತನು ತನ್ನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಬರಲು ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಅನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನಿಗೆ ಯಾವುದೇ ಹೆಸರಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ಮಾತನಾಡುವವರು ‘ಮರ್ಸಿ’ ಎಂದಾಗ ಅವರ ಹೆಸರಿರಬೇಕು ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡರು. ಆದರೆ ಅಪರಿಚಿತರು ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಮತ್ತು ಅವರು ನಿರ್ಜನ ಸೇತುವೆಯನ್ನು ತಲುಪುವವರೆಗೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಖಚಿತಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ನಂತರ, ಅಪರಿಚಿತರು ಐದು ವ್ಯಾಲೆಟ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದು ಅಪರಿಚಿತರಲ್ಲಿ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಮ್ಮದು ಯಾವುದು ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ತನ್ನ ಕೈಚೀಲವನ್ನು ಆರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಅದರೊಳಗೆ 14 ವರ್ಷಗಳ ಗಳಿಸಿರುವ ಹಣ ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡನು. ಅಪರಿಚಿತರು ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಅನ್ನು ತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡದೆ ದೂರ ಹೋಗುವಂತೆ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಸಿದರು ಮತ್ತು “ನೀವು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದ್ದೀರಾ ಎಂದು ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಕೇಳಿದರೆ ನೀವು ಇಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಬೇಕು” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಪರಿಚಿತರು “ಹೋಗು” ಎಂದು ಹಾರೈಸುತ್ತಾ ಆ ಸ್ಥಳವನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ದೇವರು ನಿಮಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲಿ. ” ದೇವರು ಅಪರಿಚಿತರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಆಶಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

This lesson tells about a man who rescues the speaker. The speaker is in the land which is one thousand five hundred miles away from his home. The speaker knows no one there. Even he doesn’t know the local language to communicate. He knows English and Hindustani. But local people do not understand these languages.
This place is quite a big city in the valley of a mountain. In this place crime rate is very high. People of this area are merciless and are ready to do anything for money. Some of them works as soldiers, money lenders and watch man in banks, mills and commercial establishments.
In this city the speaker lives in a small and dingy room. He teaches English to migrant labours from 9:30 to 11 in the night. Here people want to learn English to write addresses in English at the post office. If they have to get it done by others, they have to pay anything between one anna and four anna.
The speaker earns very little so sleeps all day and wakes up at 4 O’clock in the evening so as to avoid the expenses of morning tea and noon lunch. One evening the speaker went to the crowded restaurant to have his food. After having the food he need to pay 11 anna, he realizes that his purse with his life’s savings of 14 rupees is missing and someone has stolen the wallet.
But the owner of the restaurant thought that the speaker is trying to cheat him. So he scolded him to pay the bill, threatens to gouge out his eyes. Other persons in the restaurant did not show any kindness toward the speaker. The speaker requested the owner to keep his coat as surety. But the owner guffaws and makes the speaker remove his coat, shirt and shoes.
When the owner asked the speaker to remove even the trousers, the speaker pleaded with him for mercy saying he has nothing inside. This invokes more laughter and the owner along with 50 other people gathered there, forces the speaker to strip further and says mockingly “There must be something underneath.”
The speaker felt insulted and resigned to his fate. He started to unbuttoning his trousers, all the time imagining himself standing naked in front of others. It is at this point that a blue-eyed, fair-complexioned, a six-footer with a red turban and white trousers intervenes and offers to pay the amount due to the owner.
A stranger asks the speaker to come with him. On the way speaker asks the name of the person. He told that he has no name. When the speaker says ‘Mercy’ must be his name. But the stranger does not react and walks on until they reach a deserted bridge.
There after making sure that no one is around, the stranger takes out five wallets and asks the stranger which of these is his. The speaker chooses his wallet and found 14 anns inside that. The stranger warns the speaker to go away without turning around and tells that “If anyone asks you whether you have seen me you must say no.” The stranger leaves that place by wishing “Go. May God help you.” The speaker hopes that God would help the stranger.
