Activity 37.1:

Read the conversation. Observe how the conversation has been reported.

Situation 1  
Stranger: Are you Mustafa’s son? Aladdin: Yes, sir, I am, but my father is dead. Stranger: This is indeed a sad news. I am your father’s brother. Go and tell your mother. (Aladdin went to his mother.) Aladdin: Mother, there is a gentleman at the door. He says he is my uncle. Should I bring him in?
Situation 2  
Mahesh: What are you doing here, Lalli? I haven’t seen you since June. Lalli: I was having a cup of coffee with Sumathi. She told me that you’ve been quite busy off late. Mahesh: Ah, yes. There’s a lot to be done at work. Lalli: Oh! And Sumathi also told me that Raju is getting married in two months. Mahesh: That I knew! Raju had called me for his engagement last week. He said that his family also missed seeing me. Lalli: Ha ha! Sumathi also just told me about the same thing before inviting me to her parents’ home for dinner. Mahesh: Have you met our other classmates? Mani told me that Jayasuma had a daughter last year. Lalli: Oh! I didn’t know that, but that’s nice to hear!

2. “We were told so by the antelopes.” said the buffaloes.

The buffaloes said that they had been telling so by the antelopes.

3. The hare said, “My lord, most certainly it’s true”. The hare said that most certainly that was true.

2. Reshma said that Renu had invited them to her party.

3. Kiran said that they must attend the party and that they should plan for it.

Kiran said, “They may attend the party and that they should plan for it.”

4. Suma’s father asked her to visit her grandmother more often.

Suma’s father, “Do you visit your grandmother more often?”

5. Akshaya said that they were planning to visit Ajja the following Sunday. Akshaya said, “They are planning to visit Ajja next Sunday.”
