What are Homonyms?

Homonyms are two or more words with the same spelling or pronunciation, but with different meanings. These words can sometimes be confusing.

The word homonym comes from the Greek word ‘homonymos’ which means ‘having the same name’.

The prefix ‘homo’ means the same, and the suffix ‘nym’ means name. Therefore, homonyms are two words that look and/or sound exactly alike.

Example:

1. Bat: a piece of equipment you use in some sports.

2. Bat: he name of an animal.

Difference between homograph and homophone:

What is Homograph?

One of two or more words spelled alike but different in meaning or derivation or pronunciation.

E.g: the bow of a ship, a bow and arrow)

What is Homophone?

Each of two or more words having the same pronunciation but different meanings, origins, or spelling.

E.g: new and knew

Homograph examples:

1. bat – used in cricket; a type of animal

2. park – an area for amusing children; garage the vehicle

3. minute- microscopic; a common measuring unit of time

4. fine- well; penalty

5. fair- light-colored; honesty

6. crane – a bird species; a vehicle for construction

7. type-  a distinctive category; to type out in keyboard

8. bear- the power of endurance and survival; a type of wild animal

9. wave-wave found in the sea; hand gesture.

10. bow- a piece of equipment; a gesture of conveying respect

11. lead- a type of metal; directing and guiding a team

12. bark- a part of the tree; dog’s barking

13. skip- jump over; to miss out absent-mindedly

14. letter- alphabetical letters; the traditional way of communication.
