ಅರುಣ್ ಕೋಲಾಟ್ಕರ್ ಮರಾಠಿ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುವ ದ್ವಿಭಾಷಾ ಕವಿ. ಅವರು ಮರಾಠಿ ಕವಿತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಕವಿತೆ ಅವರ ಕವನಗಳ ಸಂಕಲನ ‘ಜೆಜುರಿ’ಯಿಂದ ಆಯ್ದುಕೊಂಡಿದೆ.

“ಓಲ್ಡ್ ವುಮನ್” ಅನ್ನು ಅರುಣ್ ಕೋಲಾಟ್ಕರ್ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಕವಿತೆಯು ಕವಿತೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ವಯಸ್ಸಾದ ಮಹಿಳೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಭಿನ್ನ ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತಪಡಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ತನ್ನ ಬದಲಾದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನದಿಂದಾಗಿ ಅವಳನ್ನು ಹೊಸ ಬೆಳಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ದೇವಾಲಯದ ದೇಗುಲದ ಬಳಿ ಈ ಮಹಿಳೆ ದುರ್ಬಲವಾಗಿ ಆದರೆ ಅವಳ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ದೃಢವಾಗಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಅವನು ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡನು. ಐವತ್ತು ಪೈಸೆಯ ನಾಣ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕುದುರೆಮುಖ ದೇಗುಲವನ್ನು ಸುತ್ತಲು ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಸೇವೆಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕೆಂದು ಅವಳು ಬಯಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಆರಂಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪೀಕರ್ ಅವಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ಲಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ಬಯಸಿದರೂ, ಅವಳು ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಅಂಟಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾಳೆ ಮತ್ತು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿ ತನ್ನ ಸ್ವಂತ ಜೀವನವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಲು ಅವಳ ಆಳವಾದ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಅವನು ಗಮನಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅವನ ಗ್ರಹಿಕೆ ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

poems. This poem is a selection from ‘Jejury’, a collection of his poems.
Background:
“An Old Woman” is written by Arun Kolatkar. This poem presents the old woman in the poem in a different picture as the speaker discovers her in a new light owing to his changed perspective. He finds this woman near a temple shrine looking frail but firm in her eyes. She wants him to take her service to go around the horseshoe shrine for a fifty paise coin. Though initially the speaker wants to ignore her, she sticks around and he notices her deep conviction to make her own living independently. His perception changes eventually.
An Old Woman summary in English:
An old beggar woman catches hold of the sleeve of the speaker and insists on getting a fifty paisa con in alms. She tags along with him and promises that she will take him to the horseshoe temple. If he tells her that he has already seen the temple, she hobbles along with him and catches hold of his shirt tightly and again insists on getting a fifty paisa coin.
She will not let him go. Like all other old women, she, too, sticks to him life a burr (prickly seed case of plants which stick to clothes). He turns around and wants to get rid or her. In order to end this useless activity, he tells her firmly to leave him. When she remarks,
“What else can an old woman do
On hills as wretched as these”.
Short summary of An Old Woman poem
He looks right at the sky in contemplation. As he looks on her, he finds that the cracks that begin around her eyes have spread beyond her skin. The decay of the old woman has spread to the hills and the temples and in our lives. The old woman stands there alone. And he is reduced to the small change in her hand.
