Q.I Answer the following questions in 2-3 sentences each.

1. Swami’s father drew his attention to a report in the newspaper. What was the report about?

Answer: Swami’s father drew his attention to a report in the newspaper which referred to the bravery of a village boy who had fought with a tiger.

2. Why did Swami’s father want Swami to sleep alone in his office room?

Answer: Swami was sleeping beside his mother or granny like a baby. He was afraid of darkness and it was disgraceful. So his father challenged him to sleep alone in his office room to prove courage.

3. What was swami’s comment on the newspaper report? How did his view differ from that of his father?

Answer: Swami commented that the boy cannot kill the tiger and he must be a grown –up person. But Swami’s father commented that anyone who has courage can do anything if he has courage and strength.

4. How did Swami react when his father challenged him to sleep alone in the office room?

Answer: Swami tried to change the subject about the cricket club & captain. Then he said from next month onwards he- can sleep alone. Father didn’t accept. Swami went quietly and secretly to his bed, covered the blanket completely. He pretended asleep until his father came and insisted to sleep in the office room. Swami gave many excuses that the office-room was dusty, the scorpions may live there, the room was dark etc.

5. How did Swami become a hero?

Answer: One-day Father read the newspaper report. It was about a village boy who fought with a tiger. His father challenged him to sleep alone in his office room that night. While he was sleeping there, he saw a moving figure. He thought it was a devil. He bit into its ankle. It was a burglar. His cry led to his arrest and Swami became a hero.

6. Narrate Swami’s dreadful experience when he was lying in the office room?

Answer: Swami remembered the stories of devils and ghosts he had heard in his life. His friend Mani had seen the devil in the banyan tree and Muniswami’s father spat out blood when he saw the devil near the river edge. In sleep he was racked with nightmares. A tiger was chasing him. His feet stuck to the ground. Swami tried to open his eyes but his eyelids would not open and the nightmare continued. Swami groaned in despair.

7. “Aiyo, something has bitten me”.

a) Who is the speaker?

Answer: The burglar.

b) Why had he been bitten?

Answer: Swami thought that it was the devil that had come to attack him. So, he bit him to save himself.

c) How did the speaker suffer as a result of being bitten?

Answer: The speaker, a burglar, shouted in pain. This brought the people of the house there leading to his arrest.

Answer: Swami

b) Why did he make this remark?

Answer: To escape from his father.

c) What does it show about his character?

Answer: He was cowardice and afraid to sleep alone.
